Boulder Junction Snowmobiling and Snowmobile Trail Condition Reports

Welcome to the Boulder Junction Trail Reports page. As regular visitors to Boulder Junction will know, the local snowmobile club offers some of the finest riding in the Midwest.

The 130 miles of trail in and around the Boulder Junction area are constantly groomed throughout the season, to keep them in tip-top shape. The trails are connected to hundreds of miles of Vilas County trails, and thousands of miles of northern Wisconsin trails. It's no accident that our area continually wins awards for best snowmobile destination. It is also worth noting that Boulder Junction lies far enough north that we are well inside the U.P. snow-belt. We often receive lake effect snow that communities to our south do not receive.

LAST WEEKEND TO RIDE: Well here we are with the last trail report of this season, and the trails are great. We had six inches of snow last night so things are beautiful on the trails. The weatherman says it will be in the 40's the next few days so I guess its a good time to close. Have a great summer, hope to see you all next year. Think Snow, but not until December. Trails remain in good condition, but are pretty icy after the thaw and refreeze earlier this week. Warmer temps are predicted for today so they should soften up a bit. Be careful at road crossings and in town, these areas get brown in a hurry from all the sand that was down on the roads. Come on up, the late season riding is still good. I hope everyone had a merry Christmas, now its time to come up and ride. The trails are in very good condition, we had several inches of fresh snow over Christmas. There will be a lot of riders here the next week so be careful on the trails. We are grooming every trail every night so keep an eye out for the groomers and pull over when you encounter them on the trail. The driver will signal you when it is safe to pass. The trails will be in the best condition early in the day so if you have younger riders, that would be the best time to ride. The trails get pretty rough by late afternoon, but be assured we will do all we can to smooth them out over night. Just a reminder, some of our trails have changed or been closed in town, so stay on only the marked trails in town. Have fun and be safe. Happy Holidays! Trails are in very good condition the 3" of snow last night helped to smooth them out. We are grooming and the forecast looks good. Safe Travels! Just a reminder, the trail on the east side of town has been closed, all riders must enter town from the west. There was some confusion on how to get to JJ's and the Acorn Lodge, you can enter them from the west, off of trail 15, Just follow the signs. We are happy to report that the Boulder Junction snowmobile trails are in very good condition, the snow we got the past couple days helped fill in some low spots. Come on up and ride. Just a reminder, the trail on the east side of town has been closed, all riders must enter town from the west. There was some confusion on how to get to JJ's and the Acorn Lodge, you can enter them from the west, off of trail 15, Just follow the signs. I am happy to report that the DNR has allowed the snowmobile trails to officially open at 6:00 pm on Friday the 13th. The Boulder Junction Snowmobile Club has had all trails inspected and certified ready to open. We have been out grooming the trails and they are in very good condition. The gates will open by 6:00 pm Friday. There are a few changes to the trails this year that riders should be aware of. Please use caution when riding near the community center on trail 15 south of town. The trail now winds behind the old building which has not yet been torn down. The new route is well marked but use caution in this area. Trail 15 north of town now has fences along its path needed for the dual use with the bike trail, so be alert when riding in that area. The trail that went on the east side of town for access to JJ's and the Acorn lodge has been closed, so it is necessary to enter town from the west only. I don't think there should be any problems, the trails are well marked. I hope we all have a safe and enjoyable season. Thanks - Lou, Boulder Junction Snowmobile Club Trail Boss

Vilas County State funded Snowmobile trails will open Friday December 13th with the exception of Phelps trails. This is ahead of the scheduled opening of Tuesday December 17th due to the diligence of the volunteers in area clubs brushing and preparing trails after the snow/ice storm last week. The Phelps trail system will remain closed until further notice. Updated reports will be viewable here upon opening.
