Keweenaw Peninsula, Keweenaw and Houghton Counties, Snowmobiling and Snowmobile Trail Condition Reports

Keweenaw County is located in Michigan's upper peninsula, at the top, (north), end of the Keweenaw Peninsula jutting out into Lake Superior.
Natural beauty is Keweenaw County's most abundant resource. Along the 65 miles of Lake Superior shoreline are sandy beaches, rocky bays, and towering overlooks.
This county is a paradise for rockhounds, scuba divers, fishermen, snowmobilers, and cross-country skiers.

Houghton County, organized in 1848, was named after Douglass Houghton who confirmed the existence of copper in the Keweenaw Peninsula.
The natural beauty of Houghton County's landscape on the lower half of the Keweenaw Peninsula is dotted by numerous abandoned mine sites. The area's colorful history, interesting geology and its many recreational opportunities make it one of Michigan's prime tourism areas.

Keweenaw Peninsula Weather Report

Keweenaw Peninsula, Keweenaw and Houghton Counties, Michigan Snowmobiling and Snowmobile Trail Condition Reports
The snowmobile trails from Twin Lakes to Copper Harbor are open and groomers are out working on them. Conditions are poor to fair. Any trail usage should be done with care until we have better snow cover as there may still be areas that have rocks, stumps or branches not yet covered by snow. Remember to watch out for the groomers when you’re out on the trails….they have the right of way!!! There is logging on a short portion of Trails 132 and 133. The protective mat on the Portage Lift Bridge between Houghton and Hancock is down. Please be aware that if you snowmobile on U.S. Coast Guard property you could face federal trespass charges. The Keweenaw Convention & Visitors Bureau asks that you stay on the trails, STAY OFF THE ICE, respect private property, do not drink and drive, and above all else, please, drive safely. The signs on the snowmobile trails are there for the riders’ safety. Please, DO NOT remove or destroy these signs.

The snowmobile trails from Twin Lakes to Copper Harbor are open, but are still in poor condition. Groomers were out doing some panning over the weekend from Toivola to Copper Harbor but we still need more snow to upgrade conditions. Any trail usage should be done with extreme care until we have better snow cover as some areas still may have rocks, stumps, branches or wet areas not yet covered by snow and hazards that have not yet been identified. Watch out for the groomers when you're out on the trails...they have the right of way. There is logging on a short portion of Trails 132 and 133.
