Manitowish Waters Weather Report

Manitowish Waters, Wisconsin Snowmobiling and Snowmobile Trail Conditions Reports
Warm weather over the weekend softened the trails. Road crossings are getting bare. However there is still some good riding to be had. I rode up the grade Monday and out trail 10 to the "Sunken Horse" on the Flowage, Mercer and MW had both been out late sun and early mon morning. Trails were flat and good, the grade up to Mercer was snow covered. Be careful going into corners as they are getting icey. Trail sections that share plowed roads took a hit. Its a bit cooler today and a little overcast. A little snow would help freshen things up, but you can still get some miles on. Its a great time of year to ride, less traffic, more daylight and some great scenery. overall i would call our trails fair to good in the woods.

A few inches of snow yesterday followed by cold temps are keeping the trails good. Please stay on the marked trails, our landowners are very gracious in allowing us to run trails across their property. Failure to stay on marked trails puts our trail system in jeopardy. Remember to use your hand signals, watch for oncoming traffic and have fun. DUE TO THE DEEP SNOW, WE CONTINUE TO SEE ALOT OF DEER ON THE TRAILS. PLEASE BE A GOOD PERSON AND WATCH OUT FOR DEER, GIVE THEM A BRAKE. The MW Sno Skeeters would like to thank everyone that purchased raffle tickets for the ARCTIC CAT, donated prizes for the Rendezvous and attending our club functions. We had a great turnout on Saturday! Thankyou for your continued support

Took a ride Mon up to Yukon 51, NO water on trail 8 between MW and Lazy Ace (a bit bumpy but I'm sure they will be able to groom that soon) the grade (#17) was in Awesome shape! hats off to Mercer Sno Goers & White Thunder Riders for keeping that in such great shape. We continue to hear great things about all the other Vilas clubs. Our trails are in fair condition, They will be upgraded by the weekend. Trail #2 & #8 are actually in good to very good condition. Manitowish Waters Sno Skeeters just passed Our trail inspection with flying colors. Vilas County trails open Friday December 20th at 8am. Our Volunteers were out again yesterday panning and grooming. This may very well be some of the best conditions we've ever had for an opener. However, with this deep snow, Beware that deer are really struggling to get around. They will be on the trails. It is against the law to chase deer, "BE A GOOD HUMAN" and give them time to find a way off the trail. Also, stay off the lakes, they are not safe. You will get stuck or worse. A huge shoutout to our volunteers for all the hard work getting the trails ready. It was very labor intensive this year with heavy snow, wet sections of trail & trees down. Remember to ride right, use your hand signals and respect the landowners by staying on marked trails Trail conditions are very good

NEWS RELEASE / PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT DATE: 2 December 2019 TO: News Media and Other Parties of Interest FROM: Dale Mayo, Vilas County Parks & Recreation Administrator RE: Vilas County Snowmobile Trails Remain CLOSED THE VILAS COUNTY SNOWMOBILE TRAIL SYSTEM OFFICIALLY REMAINS CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. The volunteers that make up the eleven snowmobile clubs in the Vilas County Snowmobile Alliance (VCSA) are working hard to get the Vilas snowmobile trails open in a timely manner. The ample amount of snow on the ground is only one part of the equation to open the system. This wet heavy snow brought down a lot of trees that need to be removed. The heavier than normal precipitation this past fall season created a lot of wet areas that were starting to freeze. The additional weigh of the new snow is creating problems in those locations. Many of these areas are becoming wet again. Snowmobile clubs are out packing these problem areas to allow them to freeze. Vilas County snowmobile trails open on average in mid-December, conditions permitting. Please be patient and another announcement will be forthcoming around that time.

March 13th 2019 We Rode mon and trails were excellent, However it warmed up yesterday and it looks like a chance of rain starting wed night through Thur with a chance of snow Thur night into Friday.  There is still a ton of snow still out there, but it is soft due to warm weather.  Today I would call our trails good, but stay tuned.  I will update again tomorrow.   If you're planning a weekend trip up, I would still come up.  Temps cool a bit,  and a chance of snow Friday.  A big thank you to all of our groomers for doing such a great job this Winter! BEWARE OF DEER AND OTHER WILDLIFE ON THE TRAIL With the deep snow in the woods you will see many deer trying to move around.  Be a good person and give them time to get off of the trail.  It is this time of year that is real hard on all the wildlife: cold temps, scarce food sources and poor mobility due to deep snow  makes it tough on them.    A huge thank you to all donors, sponsors, volunteers and those who came out to the Rendezvous Saturday.  It was a Huge Success! REMEMBER: RIDE RIGHT, USE YOUR HAND SIGNALS, BEWARE OF ONCOMING TRAFFIC AND RESPECT OUR LANDOWNERS BY STAYING ON THE MARKED TRAILS! Manitowish Waters trails remain in good condition. I know its hard to believe after all the traffic, but we are still hearing good things about the trails. JAN 7th 2019 Our trails range from fair to good.  With the 4" of heavy wet snow we received, i wouldn't be surprised if we upgrade Our whole system to good in a couple days.  You might have heard we had some light drizzle/ freezing rain today.  Don't fret, this can actually help the trail base.  This is good packing snow and with colder temps coming tomorrow, the trails should set up nicely.    I had a chance to talk to riders this weekend and they were happy with the riding they had.   Sunday morning (about 4am) a couple of our groomer operators went out and were able to groom all of trail #6 up to Winchester.  THIS IS VERY ENCOURAGING NEWS! AND JUST ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF HOW HARD OUR VOLUNTEERS ARE WORKING TO MAKE OUR TRAILS AS GOOD AS THEY CAN BE. Trails are in early season condition.  Conditions range from poor to fair.  trail 8 and 2 are fair.  trail 6  is poor.  There is one small section (6 feet long) just north of the intersection of trail 6 and 2 that has thin ice and some open water.  we packed it with straw today.  It is passable but be aware that it is there.  Also we haven't been able to groom that section, so it is rough.   As you are out riding, remember this.  OUR VOLUNTEERS HAVE BEEN BUSTING THEIR BUTTS TO MAKE OUR TRAILS AS GOOD AS THEY CAN BE.  While most people are enjoying the holidays, Chris and Mike and other volunteers across the Northwoods were out today maintaining our trails.  Our club is not alone, Remember that as you visit other trail systems.  We are all in this together!  Please help support all Snowmobile clubs: Buy our raffle tickets, attend our fundraisers and thank the groomers Stay on marked trails and enjoy our system responsibly. THE VILAS COUNTY SNOWMOBILE TRAIL SYSTEM WILL REMAIN CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. The Vilas County Snowmobile Alliance met on 12/19/2018. There was a unanimous decision to keep the area snowmobile trails closed and not project a possible opening date. The extended forecast does not call for enough snow to create an adequate base and we are seeing some of the low areas starting to thaw. We will make an announcement at such time that trails can safely open.

Snow has arrived early this year! So this is encouraging news for area clubs!! Please remember you cannot ride until the trails are officially open! All clubs rely on the generosity of our landowners, who graciously allow us to cross their property. Many of these landowners hunt the muzzle loader season (which follows the rifle season) Disturbing hunters and riding before the opening date puts our trail system in jeopardy!! Stay tuned for trail updates and I will keep you posted on a tentative opening date. Vilas county has 11 snowmobile clubs and every mile of every trail needs to be inspected before we can open together. We are hopeful for more cold to firm up swamp sections.

Vilas County trails will be open through the weekend. Please understand that trails are overall in poor condition. You will find decent riding in the woods, however it is getting harder to connect the good sections. Road crossings, sections that share roads and exposed areas will be thin to bare. Please respect landowners who graciously allow us to cross their property and stay on the trails. Clubs lose trails when riders run off of the trails, so if you love our sport as much as I do, Respect the Property owners, Or stay home. That being said, please be safe and have fun out there!

Our trails are still fair to good. if you can believe the weather forecast this will probably be the last weekend with decent riding. We took a short ride to Boulder on #2 yesterday and it was good to very good. a couple icey spots. otherwise good snow coverage the whole way. Have also heard good things about PI, Arbor Vitae, Land O' Lakes areas. White Thunder, Mercer has some great riding as well, its just tough getting through Mercer. The grade is very icey and some bare spots. Get out there and enjoy. Alot of deer on the trails, so use caution and please respect them, give them some room and DO NOT CHASE THEM. You are in their home.

I would call our trails fair, with some exposed areas being poor. However, We're hearing pretty decent reviews on the trails. Had a group that rode up from Minocqua yesterday and they said it was pretty good overall, some icey spots but not bad at all. I'm heading out to take a look see myself and will report back tonight. Still overcast and a few snowflakes in the air.

Our trails range from poor to fair to good in some spots. The forecast is for some snow and clouds over the next few days. We still have a very solid base, an inch or 2 would make for some pretty good riding. This is the time of year things can change pretty quickly so we will do our best to report as conditions change. A big thankyou to the Manitowish Waters Chamber for mailing maps out for us and their help in reporting trail conditions. A huge thankyou to the groomer operators who vounteer their time to make our trails the best they can be!

Took a nice ride yesterday. Trails really benefited from a few inches of fresh snow. Its that time of the year when conditions can change rapidly. but for now i would call or trails good. They should be good through the next week. But i will continue to update on a regular basis. A huge thankkyou to all who attended the Winterfest Rendezvous and those who purchased tickets on our Artic Cat Raffle. Congratulations to winner Dave mueller! Dave is a club member and helps out at Our Duck Race! A huge thankyou to all of our volunteers that made our event a huge success! Some of these guys took 2 days off of work to help set the tent and organize everything. This is alot of work, but so rewarding to know that it went so well! Proceeds from the Winterfest and raffles go towards trail maintenance! I am proud of how everyone pitched in to make this such a great event: from the people and businesses who donated raffle items, to those who attended and purchased raffle tickets and especially the Volunteers for Busting A@*! Thankyou!!

Happy New Year! The weekend brought alot of snowmobilers to the area. The cold temps really helped keep our base in good shape. Our trails remain in fair to good condition. The riders have been happy with what they have seen. The Boulder loop (trail #2 and #8) are good. The Pi loop is doing pretty good as well. A big thankyou to our groomers as well as all the groomers across the state! Help all the clubs out by feeding the trail pig or making a donation to your clubs. We are looking for raffle prizes for our Winterfest Rendezvous (Saturday Feb 17th) if you have something to donate you can drop it by The Pea Patch. The Manitowish Waters Sno-Skeeters Snowmobile Club are waiting for the word on the Vilas county Snowmobile trails. This means 11 clubs will be weighing in. I just spoke with Dale Mayo (Vilas County Parks and Recreation Administrator) and let hem know our opinion. In the interest of Safety and a quality snowmobiling experience, The MW Sno Skeeters are in favor of temporarily Closing the trails. We have water issues in the swamps and poor trail coverage in general. If we see Winter again and have a chance to reopen before the end of March we would be more than happy to do what it takes to Re Open.

Our trails are in poor condition, However People found good riding over the weekend. There is still decdent riding On trail 8 towards boulder and Arbor Vitae. Our problem areas are trail6 towards Winchester and a small portion of trail 2 between Smokeys on CTH W and the intersection of trail 6 and 2. these areas are very rough and have some standing Water on the trail. The County is considering its options: Stay open, close or temporarily close. This requires 11 different clubs weighing in. I will let you all know the moment I know. Im going to brave this drizzle and check our problem areas this morning. I would like to thank our Trail Boss Mark Smit for his hard work, also groomers: Bob Skrobot, Mike Swatek, Chris Sindberg, Bryan Klug and Wes Lupa For their dedication and many hours spent keeping our trails in such good shape this Winter Trail condition: Poor Posted by: Barry Hopkins

We just rode through sections of trail 2 (trail goes to Boulder Jct) between Smokeys and the intersection on trail 6. Then we rode north and then back south of that intersection towards Winchester and back towards MW on trail 6. We found 6" + standing water over an ice base of the swamp section. Some pretty tough riding to navigate (almost like water skipping) We need some cold weather to firm this up to make it safer. The County will be voting Monday on wether to stay open or temporarily close. I will let you know as soon as I do. I would discourage riding through the areas I mentioned. Our trails remain in Poor condition. Trail condition: Poor Posted by: Barry Hopkins

Just took a quick ride. The snow has settled a bit but are holding up just fine. In fact the freezing rain/ snow we had last night is going to set up tonight into a great trail base as temperatures continue to drop. It has been windy so use caution, slow it down a bit and be on the look out for branches on the trail. We dont have any trails on the lakes, but I am urging you to stay off of the lakes: Warm weather & the weight of the snow has formed alot of slush on top of what little ice we have. Have fun and remember to signal oncoming snowmobilers as to how many are behind you.

Put on about 90 miles today through MW, Mercer and Hurley trail systems. a bit more snow north but we are all staying out of swamps until we get more cold. So use caution in those areas that havent been groomed. Our trails are in fair comndition. I would call them good but we have not groomed through our swamp sections yet. They are packed and frozen, with plenty of traffic over them, but we like to err on the side of caution. the riders that are out are happy with the conditions for this time of year. We are way ahead of the past 2 winters so that is very encouraging. In fact i would say we are pretty dog gone lucky for this time of year based on the warm fall. Latest Trail Report Thursday, January 22, 2015 at 5:04pm - 1/22/2015 Image Our trails are in good condition. Do continue to ride carefully and slow through the corners, there will be alot of traffic again this weekend. I rode over to "The Idle Hour Tuesday" through Flambeu across their marked lakes to Chequamagon trail 142 and 144 back up to Springstead, then 182 to 17 to 8 back to MW. 8 was a bit choppy between Lazy Ace and MW trails but not bad. All other trails were good. I did mention Lakes, some clubs have trails on the lakes MW does not. Stay off of the lakes unless you are in an area that has marked trails on lakes. Then stay on those marked trails. People are still getting stuck in the slush off of the trails. The problem is we had alot of early season snow on top of very little ice, so the lakes remain slushy. Remember our upcoming events: Sunday Feb 1st Breakfast at the Pea Patch 8 am - noon and drawing for Guns and Roses Raffle Saturday Feb 14th Winterfest Rendezvous Winterfest Rendezvous, Saturday Feb 14th. Events include: Ice fishing contest, Raffles, Kids games, Live Music by Justin Russell inside our heated tent, drawing for a 2015 Skidoo Renegade, food and beverages available, Fireworks show at 6:30. We are looking for raffle items so if you have something you would like to donate, you can drop it off at the Pea Patch. This is a really fun day and one of our biggest fundraisers for the Sno Skeeters. see more information on our website calendar at: www.mw-snoskeeters.com Trail condition: Good Posted by: Barry Hopkins

Latest Trail Report Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at 7:39am - 1/20/2015 We saw some warm wether and alot of traffic over the weekend, especially Saturday. So the trails got a bit bumpy and soft by Sat night. But the Groomer has been out and we heard great things again yesterday about the trails. I am calling our trails Good to very good. Let me get back to you after riding today and we may be right back to "very good" rating. I can tell you this, if you have a chance to break away and do some riding during the week, DO IT!! you will see Less traffic and great trails. Remember our upcoming events: Breakfast at the Pea Patch, Sunday, Feb 1st and drawing for guns and roses. 8 am- noon Winterfest Rendezvous, Saturday Feb 14th. Latest Trail Report Thursday, January 8, 2015 at 2:15pm - 1/8/2015 Our trails seem to get better every day. A few inches of snow already today and its still coming down. Our trails are very good and will be even better after the groomer gets out there tonight. with the fresh snow comes snow dust.... allow enough riding space between the rider ahead of you to stop safely. Another safety idea: The Sno Skeeters sells reflective Sno Skeeter Helmet stickers $5 these are pretty nice to make yourself more visible to the rider behind you. Available at the Pea Patch and soon to be at other area businesses. Remember to stay on the trails: Snowmobiling is a privilege, not a right. Respect our landowners who are kind enough to allow us the use of their property. Remember these upcoming events: All you can eat Pizza at the Rustic Roadhaus: Sat Jan 17th 5-8 pm Breakfast and raffle for guns and roses at the Pea Patch: Sunday Feb 1st 8am-noon Winterfest Rendezvous: Sat Feb 14th. Our groomer is out as I Write this report. Sould be some great riding this weekend! We are keeping trail #6 to WInchester closed for another day or so. The wet area is frezzing up good, we just would like to give it a bit longer to be good and solid to support all the traffic. this really is day to day so stay tuned. Latest Trail Report Wednesday, December 24, 2014 at 10:14am - 12/24/2014 I continue to rate our trails as fair, only for the fact that trail#6 is not groomed and has an open wet area about a mile north of Manitowish Waters. It is rideable but a novice rider may want to avoid this trail. It should be fine over the weekend as the temperatures will eventually freeze this area. Other than that section are trails are Good. The groomer was out last night. the picture on our web page was taken last night after the groomer went by. We are offering a snowmobile safety course at the community center friday and saturday. call Merry at 715-543-2048 for information. Merry Christmas!!! Trail condition: Fair Posted by: Barry Hopkins

Latest Trail Report Thursday, December 18, 2014 at 8:51am - 12/18/2014 We've seen about 3-4" of snow over the last few days. Temps have cooled off. No snow in the forecast until Sunday, but then there is Snow forecasted daily for the next 6 days after that. I rode our swamp sections Tuesday and they were starting to refreeze. They are rideable, not great but you can get through. Overall I would still rate many sections fair, but some are Poor (swamps) If I had to wager a guess, I would say that our trails will be in much better shape by the mid to end of next week. Fair at worst, good is what we are hoping. I will continue to ride and update what I see and hear. Ride safe and hope to see you soon! Posted by: Barry Hopkins
