Manitowish Waters, Wisconsin Snowmobiling and Snowmobile Trail Conditions Reports
The Manitowish Waters Sno-Skeeters Snowmobile Club are waiting for the word on the Vilas county Snowmobile trails. This means 11 clubs will be weighing in. I just spoke with Dale Mayo (Vilas County Parks and Recreation Administrator) and let hem know our opinion. In the interest of Safety and a quality snowmobiling experience, The MW Sno Skeeters are in favor of temporarily Closing the trails. We have water issues in the swamps and poor trail coverage in general. If we see Winter again and have a chance to reopen before the end of March we would be more than happy to do what it takes to Re Open.

WInter isnt givin up just yet!!!!!! With the bit of cold and snow we've had we are keeping Vilas County trails open through the weekend. I rode our swampy areas yesterday and they were 95% frozen over...... but I better check again! So I HAVE to go for a ride today instead of WORK.... tough Life I have, but somebody needs to do it. this keeps up we may try to get out and groom a bit before the weekend. I'll check in after my ride..... if I come back ha ha Trail condition: Poor

Our trails are in poor condition, However People found good riding over the weekend. There is still decdent riding On trail 8 towards boulder and Arbor Vitae. Our problem areas are trail6 towards Winchester and a small portion of trail 2 between Smokeys on CTH W and the intersection of trail 6 and 2. these areas are very rough and have some standing Water on the trail. The County is considering its options: Stay open, close or temporarily close. This requires 11 different clubs weighing in. I will let you all know the moment I know. Im going to brave this drizzle and check our problem areas this morning. I would like to thank our Trail Boss Mark Smit for his hard work, also groomers: Bob Skrobot, Mike Swatek, Chris Sindberg, Bryan Klug and Wes Lupa For their dedication and many hours spent keeping our trails in such good shape this Winter Trail condition: Poor Posted by: Barry Hopkins

We just rode through sections of trail 2 (trail goes to Boulder Jct) between Smokeys and the intersection on trail 6. Then we rode north and then back south of that intersection towards Winchester and back towards MW on trail 6. We found 6" + standing water over an ice base of the swamp section. Some pretty tough riding to navigate (almost like water skipping) We need some cold weather to firm this up to make it safer. The County will be voting Monday on wether to stay open or temporarily close. I will let you know as soon as I do. I would discourage riding through the areas I mentioned. Our trails remain in Poor condition. Trail condition: Poor Posted by: Barry Hopkins

We got 2" of heavy wet snow last night, we are supposed to start getting substantial snow tonight through tomorrow. I am heading out soon to check conditions and will update later today. If we get the snow they are talking about, we should be able to get out and Pan the trails tomorow night. At that point our trails could possibly be upgraded to fair. but lets see what happens Trail condition: Poor Posted by: Barry Hopkins

The trails took a hit from the Sun and Warm weather over the weekend. There's still decent snow in the woods, but exposed areas and road crossings are bad. The forecast is for cooler temperatures and snow later this week. I believe we'll be riding again in a week or so, i'll be updating again mid week. Congratulations to "Skinny" Terry Mueller winner of the 2017 Skidoo. A big thankyou to all of you who support our club! Our Winterfest and our snowmobile raffle were both very succesful! We rode through MW, Presque Isle and Boulder trail systems yesterday. Trails were fair to good. The Sun was out so exposed sections were getting soft and road crossings were getting snirty. Today its a bit cooler and mostly cloudy, we had a dusting of snow. We continue to groom. Remember to get your tickets on our 2017 Skidoo Renegade. Drawing is this Saturday at the Rendezvous! Our trails are good to very good! Its cold out there so dress accordingly. We are grooming on a regular basis. I hear Mercer groomed down to MW System yesterday. There was a section of their swamp that had opened up due to the warm up we had a couple weeks ago, the cold has helped firm all of the swamps up again and the forecast looks great! Remember our Club breakfast this Sunday at The Pea Patch 8-noon.

The Manitowish Waters Sno-Skeeters Snowmobile Club trails are still snow covered with a pretty decent base. I would call the trails fair. Road crossings and some exposed areas are getting bare, but we are riding up here. We are out grooming tonight. Looks like a chance of snow just about every day. Remember to get your guns and roses tickets, the drawing is Feb 5th at our club breakfast at the Pea Patch

Our groomer was out this morning and the trails are stiil good. I dont have a crystal ball so i dont know what they will be like Saturday, next week or next month. The best I can do is tell you to watch the weather and this trail report and watch it often. Exposed areas are getting "Snirty" (dirty snow) The shaded sections are still good. If I had to guess I would say trails will be fair over the weekend. I will update again soon. Upcoming fundraisers include: Club breakfast and Guns and Roses Raffle Sun Feb 5th at The Pea Patch Winterfest rendezvous and Snowmobile Raffle Sat Feb 18th Trail condition: Good

We rode through MW, Boulder and Arbor Vitae trails yesterday. I would call our traiis fair to good. We groomed the entire trail#6 today (twice) so it is alot better now. Thats the trail bertween MW and Winchester (see picture from today) Thankyou for your patience. We got another 4" of snow last night so things are shaping up nicely. We could still use more snow, but us snowmobilers are greedy that way: we want "all the snow" A big thankyou to all the groomers and volunteers who have worked their butts off to get our trails in good shape! Also a big thankyou to the MW Chamber for mailing out Snowmobile Maps for the Club! Trail condition: Fair Posted by: Barry Hopkins

Just took a quick ride. The snow has settled a bit but are holding up just fine. In fact the freezing rain/ snow we had last night is going to set up tonight into a great trail base as temperatures continue to drop. It has been windy so use caution, slow it down a bit and be on the look out for branches on the trail. We dont have any trails on the lakes, but I am urging you to stay off of the lakes: Warm weather & the weight of the snow has formed alot of slush on top of what little ice we have. Have fun and remember to signal oncoming snowmobilers as to how many are behind you.

Put on about 90 miles today through MW, Mercer and Hurley trail systems. a bit more snow north but we are all staying out of swamps until we get more cold. So use caution in those areas that havent been groomed. I am very happy with the earliest start we have had in 3 years. looking like a little warm up through the weekend then back to more seasonal temps Tuesday. Bake some cookies and put them out for Santa and maybe he will bring us more snow sooN! (or bring them to us ;-) Our trails are in fair to good condition. Merry christmas!

Our trails are in fair comndition. I would call them good but we have not groomed through our swamp sections yet. They are packed and frozen, with plenty of traffic over them, but we like to err on the side of caution. the riders that are out are happy with the conditions for this time of year. We are way ahead of the past 2 winters so that is very encouraging. In fact i would say we are pretty dog gone lucky for this time of year based on the warm fall. We groomed Saturday night, but are laying off until we see more snow. Some is in the forecast so i will keep you posted. ride safe, stay warm and Merry Christmas!

Latest Trail Report Thursday, January 22, 2015 at 5:04pm - 1/22/2015 Image Our trails are in good condition. Do continue to ride carefully and slow through the corners, there will be alot of traffic again this weekend. I rode over to "The Idle Hour Tuesday" through Flambeu across their marked lakes to Chequamagon trail 142 and 144 back up to Springstead, then 182 to 17 to 8 back to MW. 8 was a bit choppy between Lazy Ace and MW trails but not bad. All other trails were good. I did mention Lakes, some clubs have trails on the lakes MW does not. Stay off of the lakes unless you are in an area that has marked trails on lakes. Then stay on those marked trails. People are still getting stuck in the slush off of the trails. The problem is we had alot of early season snow on top of very little ice, so the lakes remain slushy. Latest Trail Report Thursday, January 8, 2015 at 2:15pm - 1/8/2015 Our trails seem to get better every day. A few inches of snow already today and its still coming down. Our trails are very good and will be even better after the groomer gets out there tonight. with the fresh snow comes snow dust.... allow enough riding space between the rider ahead of you to stop safely. Another safety idea: The Sno Skeeters sells reflective Sno Skeeter Helmet stickers $5 these are pretty nice to make yourself more visible to the rider behind you. Latest Trail Report Wednesday, December 24, 2014 at 10:14am - 12/24/2014 I continue to rate our trails as fair, only for the fact that trail#6 is not groomed and has an open wet area about a mile north of Manitowish Waters. It is rideable but a novice rider may want to avoid this trail. It should be fine over the weekend as the temperatures will eventually freeze this area. Other than that section are trails are Good. The groomer was out last night. the picture on our web page was taken last night after the groomer went by. We are offering a snowmobile safety course at the community center friday and saturday. call Merry at 715-543-2048 for information. Merry Christmas!!! Trail condition: Fair Posted by: Barry Hopkins

Latest Trail Report Thursday, December 18, 2014 at 8:51am - 12/18/2014 We've seen about 3-4" of snow over the last few days. Temps have cooled off. No snow in the forecast until Sunday, but then there is Snow forecasted daily for the next 6 days after that. I rode our swamp sections Tuesday and they were starting to refreeze. They are rideable, not great but you can get through. Overall I would still rate many sections fair, but some are Poor (swamps) If I had to wager a guess, I would say that our trails will be in much better shape by the mid to end of next week. Fair at worst, good is what we are hoping. I will continue to ride and update what I see and hear. Ride safe and hope to see you soon! Posted by: Barry Hopkins
