Presque Isle, Wisconsin Snowmobiling and Snowmobile Trail Conditions Reports
Area Report: March continues to provide great snowmobile conditions. The sun and warmer temperatures have taken a toll on what was the best conditions of the year. Presque Isle/Winchester trails are reported to be in GOOD to VERY GOOD condition as well as all the surrounding areas! March is a wonderful time to snowmobile. The days are longer with moderate temperatures but one has only to look at the calendar to know it won’t last! This would be a great week/weekend to experience the last of the 2013 Season. Remember, when you ride, proceed with caution and always “Ride Right”. Grooming is on a "as needed" basis, so you may encounter grooming equipment on the trails both during the day or night. Stay tuned and “Think Snow”!

The Presque Isle/Winchester trails are reported to be in EXCELLENT condition. Snow depths continue to grow and snow is in this week’s forecast! Wisconsin has returned to normal February weather which makes for wonderful snowmobiling! However, here is the caveat… ONLY 1 weekend left in February and with March comes the SUN, longer days, and a destruction of snowmobile trails. This would be a great week/weekend to experience PERFECT SNOWMOBILING! Remember, when you ride, proceed with caution and always “Ride Right”. Grooming is on a daily schedule so you may encounter grooming equipment on the trails both during the day or night. Stay tuned and “Think Snow”!

The Presque Isle/Winchester trails are reported to be in VERY GOOD TO EXCELLENT condition. Snow depths are approaching seasonal normals and LES (Lake Effect Snows) continue to add fresh powder to the trails. Last week’s freezing rain on a fresh snowfall has helped create a good base. There is a chance of more snow this week and temperatures rising to above normal. Sounds like a great time to go snowmobiling! Remember, IF you ride, proceed with caution and always “Ride Right”. Date of Report: 01/28/2013 Trail Conditions: Good Snow Cover: 10 to 16 inches Area Report: The Presque Isle/Winchester trails are reported to be in GOOD/VERY GOOD condition. Snow depths are still below seasonal normals but a couple of recent dumping of fresh powder has added to the base. SNIRT shows with heavy traffic because of the thin base. There is some chance of more snow on Tuesday (1/29/13) and then temps will plummet. Remember, IF you ride, proceed with caution; expect ocational rocks and dirt exposed. Grooming has resumed so remember the Presque Isle/Winchester Club will have grooming equipment on the trails both during daytime and night so expect a possible encounter. Stay tuned and “Think Snow”! Even minimal traffic can produced SNIRT. We continue to catch more LES, with more in the forecast. Remember, IF you ride, proceed with caution; expect rough trails with some rocks and dirt exposed. Limited grooming has resumed so remember the Presque Isle/Winchester Club will have grooming equipment on the trails both during daytime and night so expect a possible encounter. Date of Report: 01/18/2013 Trail Conditions: Fair Snow Cover: 4 to 8 inches Area Report: The Presque Isle/Winchester trails are reported to be in FAIR condition. The minimal snow depths were enhanced with about 4 inches of fresh powder this AM (1/18/13) barely covering the base. Even light traffic is bound to produce (SNIRT). There is some chance of snow every day throughout the weekend. Remember, IF you ride, proceed with caution; expect rough trails with some rocks and dirt exposed. Limited grooming has resumed so remember the Presque Isle/Winchester Club will have grooming equipment on the trails both during daytime and night so expect a possible encounter. The Presque Isle/Winchester trails are reported to be in VERY POOR condition. Because of the minimal snow depths riders have exposed the base creating a mixture of snow and dirt (SNIRT). Now warmer temperatures and bright sunny days have exacted their toll, leaving many areas without snow. Remember, IF you ride, proceed with caution, expect rough trails with many rocks and dirt exposed and no grooming until we get fresh snow. If/when snow comes the Presque Isle/Winchester Club will have grooming equipment on the trails both during daytime and night so expect a possible encounter. Stay tuned and “Think Snow”!

The Presque Isle/Winchester Snowmobile Trails are reported to be in FAIR/GOOD condition with many sections showing a lot of SNIRT because of the MINIMAL SNOW BASE. Grooming and Panning are being performed on a limited schedule. Trail 6 West, 11 North and 14 West have all been groomed (including the swamps) however Trail 6 East has several wet areas that have yet to be crossed. Remember, when you ride, proceed with caution, expect rough trails, little grooming, minimal snow base and slow travel. The Presque Isle/Winchester Club will have grooming equipment on the trails both during daytime and night so expect a possible encounter. Stay tuned and “Think Snow”!

The Presque Isle/Winchester trails are reported to be in FAIR condition with some sections reported to be GOOD. Early season riders are saying most sections have sufficient snow. However, (SNOW DEPTHS ARE STILL MINIMAL!!) Grooming/Panning of the new snow started on Saturday and continues on a limited basis. The poorly frozen swamps sections HAVE NOT been groomed. Remember, when you ride, proceed with caution, expect rough trails, little grooming, minimal snow base and slow travel. The Presque Isle/Winchester Club will have grooming equipment on the trails both during daytime and night so expect a possible encounter. Stay tuned and “Think Snow”!

Mother Nature delivered a load of much needed snow just in time for Christmas. The delivery was smaller than that of Central Wisconsin but measures between 6 and 8 inches of much needed ground cover. The Presque Isle/Winchester and Vilas County Trails are open. (SNOW DEPTHS ARE STILL MINIMAL!!) Early riders need to proceed with caution. Most area lakes still have only a thin layer of ice. Trail sections that pass through wet areas MAY NOT BE COMPLETELY FROZEN. Remember, when you ride, proceed with caution, expect rough trails, little grooming, minimal snow base and slow travel. The Presque Isle/Winchester Club will have grooming equipment on the trails both during daytime and night so expect a possible encounter. Stay tuned and “Think Snow”!

We are announcing the Official opening of the Presque Isle/Winchester and Vilas County Trails. (SNOW DEPTHS ARE STILL MINIMAL!!) Early riders need to proceed with caution. Many area lakes still have open water! Trail sections that pass through wet areas MAY NOT BE SUFFICIENTLY FROZEN. Remember, IF YOU ride proceed with caution, expect rough trails, little grooming, minimal snow base and slow travel. The Presque Isle/Winchester Club will have grooming equipment on the trails (conditions permitting) both during daylight and night so expect a possible encounter. Stay tuned and “Think Snow”!

Welcome to the 2012-2013 Snowmobile Season. The first snow of the season has created excitement for Snowmobiling! Our Club has been very busy preparing for the coming season by hosting a ‘brushing’ weekend, signing the new “Pipkie Park” area around the “Rearing Pond” and getting the trail ready for a December 10th “Opening Day” (conditions permitting)! You can check out all the latest club activities as well as the proposed trail opening date by accessing the Sno-Bunnies website at http://www.sno-bunnies.com/index.htm Until next time stay tuned and “Think Snow”!

I heard someone say, “Put a fork in it!” Meaning; “it’s done!” I put my sleds into storage today while I could still ride on snow. With upper 60’s in the midweek forecast and rain coming I suspect there will be an official Vilas County trail closing date in the near future. Meanwhile some adventurous friends will be riding from lake to lake using some secret logging roads as their portages. However, once our trails are bare we ask riders to PLEASE respect our private land owners that have been generous in allowing our trails to transect their property. On behalf of the Presque Isle/Winchester Sno-Bunnies Snowmobile Club I want to thank all the volunteers and land owners that make a great season possible. Until next time, “Think Snow”.

It’s March and it feels like spring! This doesn’t bid well for snow enthusiasts. The sun, warm nights, light rain, it all foretells the beginning of the end. Oh, yes! “Old Man Winter” isn’t going to give up without a fight but the writing is on the wall, err snow, if you know what I mean. There is still substantial snow in the woods but our trail system is subject to the sun and was it not for this last dumping of snow it would be all over. As it is we’ll probably get a couple more days of riding but it’s going to be found in those heavily wooded or shaded trail sections. The lakes will be good for quite a while yet but anyone riding is going to have to expect sections of dry trail. Because of the aforementioned conditions we are classifying our trails as being FAIR. Remember; expect to find corners that are dry, rocky and icy. Our grooming has suspended but could resume with snow. Until next time; ride defensively, stay tuned and “Think Snow”!

Snow! Snow! Snow! In the past 4 days our area has received over 18 inches of snow and it’s still snowing! March is going to definitely come in like a Lion and for the first time this snowmobile season I can proclaim EXCELLENT trail conditions! Snow is in the forecast every day for the next five days with another significant storm positioned for the weekend. All of northern Wisconsin has received significant snow and every club in our area will be out grooming this snow. Given the mild weather we’ve seen this season I can’t guarantee how long these conditions will last so if you’re waiting for the perfect time to come north… it isn’t going to get any better than this. Remember; expect to find groomers working any time of the day, ride defensively, stay tuned and “Think Snow”!

The last week of February has the potential of being the best snow conditions of the month! Last week from the 15th to the 19th our system received snow every day. It wasn’t a lot of snow maybe a total of 4 inches… but it gave some revitalization to a sick system. Low traffic, light snow and trail grooming have perked the Presque Isle/Winchester Trail System from FAIR to GOOD. A quick look at the weather forecast and our area has a chance of snow every day this week. Tuesday (2/21) we picked up another 3+ inches and long range forecasters are saying next Sunday (2/26) has the potential of being the biggest snow event this year! Remember; expect to find corners that are exposed, rocky and icy. Our groomers have cut back but continue to follow a regular schedule. Until next time; ride defensively, stay tuned and “Think Snow”!

A major disappointment for mid February snowmobiling is the report I’m writing! Our trails have several short dirt sections and a lot of “SNIRT”. In the Presque Isle/Winchester System riders who stick to woods trails such as 14W or 11N into Michigan will find great trail riding. However, much of the trail sections before and after these routes are dry. We are classifying our trails as being FAIR. A little snow added to our very icy base could improve the riding considerably but the dry sections are getting larger and so are the snow requirements. Remember; expect to find corners that are dry, rocky and icy. Our groomers have cut back but haven’t totally quit. Until next time; ride defensively, stay tuned and “Think Snow”!

Sunny, clear, cold weather hasn’t been good for the snowmobile trails in Northern Wisconsin. Light traffic and grooming have rearranged the remaining trail base but now we’re waiting for snow. Our snow dance may be rewarded! National Weather Service has given Presque Isle/Winchester a 60% chance of an inch of snow tonight and a 60% chance of another half an inch Friday. Our trails have several short dirt sections and a lot of “SNIRT”. Riders who stick to the woods trails and avoid town and road crossings will still find sections of GOOD Riding. Because of the aforementioned conditions we are classifying our trails as being FAIR. However, a little snow added to our very icy base could improve the riding considerably. Remember; expect to find corners that are dry, rocky and icy. Our groomers could be operating any hour of the day. Until next time; ride defensively, stay tuned and “Think Snow”! The weather hasn’t been good to the snowmobile trails in Northern Wisconsin. What had been great is now gone. The Presque Isle/Winchester Trails are still being groomed nightly but “All the King’s Horses and All the Kings Men” won’t put these trails back together without some snow! (My apologies to Humpty Dumpty). Our trails have several short dirt sections and a lot of “SNIRT”. Riders who stick to the woods trails and avoid town and road crossings will still find sections of GOOD Riding. The first week of February will come with FAIR to GOOD trail conditions in the Presque Isle/Winchester area. The past weekend recorded a record numbers of snowmobiles in Northern Wisconsin. Our trails experienced significant trail erosion. The groomer operators have been working every night to restore the trails. Several trail sections are showing a ‘mocha’ color. Many corners are down to frozen dirt. With grooming this will improve but without significant snow it is a problem. This week’s forecast is for milder temperatures and some light snowfalls. We have a lot of VERY GOOD riding but because of the aforementioned conditions we are warning riders. Remember; expect icy corners, encountering a groomer and a possible reckless rider. Until next time; ride with care, stay tuned and “Think Snow”! On Saturday February 4th The Sno-Bunnies will be serving a Breakfast Buffet Fundraiser at the Yacht Club Bar in UpTown Presque Isle 8:30 to 11:30

The last weekend of January is going present some of the BEST SNOWMOBILING of the season! Mild temperatures and a good chance of new snow suggest it doesn’t get any better than this! The Presque Isle/Winchester nightly grooming schedule has shaped our trails into VERY GOOD to EXCELLENT status. If it were not for some corners continuing to show ‘blow out’ as well as a few hilltops, the whole system would be EXCELLENT. Remember; expect icy corners, encountering a groomer and a possible reckless rider. Until next time; ride with care, stay tuned and “Think Snow”!

The fourth week of January is going to be the BEST SNOWMOBILING of the season! A nightly grooming schedule coupled with a good dose of fresh snow has been the critical factor for upgrading our trail conditions. The Presque Isle/Winchester Trails have been upgraded from good to VERY GOOD and EXCELLENT! Some corners continue to show ‘blow out’ as well as a few hilltops, but our groomers say the new snow came with enough moisture to allow ‘hook up’ without excessive spin. Midweek riders are catching the perfect conditions without crowded trails. Many fine establishments in our area are running some great mid-week specials, so this is the week to come ride! Remember; expect icy corners, encountering a groomer and a possible reckless rider. Until next time; ride with care, stay tuned and “Think Snow”!

Old Man Winter has wrapped is burley arms around the North Woods and his ‘bear-hug’ grip has locked us in COLD! His icy winds whipping over Lake Superior have dusted our area with snow. This is Good News and Bad News… Good because snow and cold is just what our groomers have been calling for. Bad because by Saturday WIND CHILLS will be approaching minus 30! The Presque Isle/Winchester Trail System (PWTS) has been upgraded to GOOD and VERY GOOD. Remember, ride with care, expect icy corners, skimpy snow stretches, the occasional rock and that possible groomer. Until next time, stay tuned and “Think Snow”!

Heavy traffic, limited base and multiple grooming have stressed the Presque Isle/Winchester Snowmobile trails. Our trails have a mocha color with corners showing ice. Our current trail conditions are FAIR to GOOD. We have snow in the forecast and we’re still on a nightly grooming schedule. Remember, ride with care, and expect conditions to be marginal with icy corners, skimpy snow stretches, the occasional rock and that possible groomer. Until next time, stay tuned and “Think Snow”!

Winter has returned to the Northwoods! It started Wednesday afternoon as a mist and snow combination then turned to all snow. So far we’ve accumulated 5 inches of new snow… and it’s still snowing! The National Weather Service has our area in line for snow until Friday night. Our Club will resume grooming tonight. Heavily wooded areas have held up well but dry spots had developed in tight corners and south facing exposures. We’re hoping this new snow will seal those dry areas and given that Friday and Saturday are forecasted to have subzero night-time lows and below normal highs, the snow should remain. I’m predicting our trail conditions will be GOOD to VERY GOOD by Saturday. Our Club as well as surrounding Clubs groom at night so keep that in mind as you ride. Remember, ride with care, and expect conditions to be marginal with icy corners, dry stretches, the occasional rock and that possible groomer. Until next time, stay tuned and “Think Snow”!

What great weather for everyone except SNOWMOBILIERS! Beautiful sunny days and temperatures in the upper 30’s! Not good for our trails. Exceptional numbers of sleds, warm weather and a limited base have taken their toll. Our club has suspended grooming to preserve what little base is left. Because of these conditions we’ve downgraded our trail status as POOR to FAIR depending on the exposure to sun. Heavily wooded areas have held up well but dry spots have developed in tight corners and south facing exposures. Tuesday January 10th should be the end of our thaw with a change in the weather predicted. Forecasters are saying snow and cold for Wednesday thru Friday.

Our club and surrounding clubs continue to groom but the cover is getting ‘ SNIRTY’ and thin. Because of these conditions we’ve downgraded our trail status to FAIR and GOOD depending on the exposure to sun. Heavily wooded areas have held up well but dry spots have developed in heavily used corners and south facing exposures. Today and tomorrow will be the worst then the weather is forecasted to bring snow and cold. Remember, ride with care, and expect to meet groomers, icy corners and fellow snowmobilers. Until next time, stay tuned and “Think Snow”!

It has become a Happy New Year for Snowmobilers in Vilas County. National Weather Service gave Presque Isle the official recognition of have received 16 inches of snow over the New Year’s Weekend! With the snow came the crowds and our trails took a beating… We’re happy to announce that the trail system has been repaired and 100% of the system is in a regular grooming schedule. Early season conditions and several wet areas had restricted access to all but one of our ‘tractors’. Our TUCKER TERRA is currently the only machine which can cover the whole system but with subzero temperatures that should soon change. The status of the Presque Isle/Winchester trail system is GOOD to VERY GOOD. Remember this is still EARLY SEASON and riders could encounter rough areas, icy patches and wet segments in low-lying areas. Stay tuned, ride carefully and “Think Snow!”

Happy New Year! 2012 came with snow (7 inches New Years Eve) and it’s still snowing! Vilas County will be in a Winter Storm Warning until 3 PM Monday January 2nd! This is welcome news for the snowmobile trail system. The Presque Isle/Winchester Snowmobile Club will resume a regular grooming schedule as long as the conditions warrant. Weather for the first week of January begins with a cold burst that moderates before the first weekend. Currently we’ve upgraded our trail system to EARLY SEASON GOOD which means riders could still encounter rough areas, icy patches and wet segments in low-lying areas. Stay tuned, ride carefully and “Think Snow!”

Good Bye 2011 and Hello 2012! New Year’s Weekend could prove to be a little heaven and a little… well you know! There is snow in the forecast as well as freezing rain and a winter blast with sub-zero wind chills! Our trails as well as neighboring areas have experienced moderate to heavy traffic resulting in sections of SNIRT and TORN CORNERS. Mother Nature has teased us with light lake flurries for several days. Many area lakes have sufficient ice to support snowmobiles and ice shanties… REMEMBER; don’t use ice routes if they’re not marked! Our trails are in early season condition and riders will encounter rough areas, icy patches and wet segments in low-lying areas. Check the weather, rider with care and “Think Snow”.

It’s Christmas Week and all through the North, Snowmobilers are waiting for Santa to deliver some snow… The trails have a thin base, and sufficient snow to allow riding. The caveat is that the trails are in early season condition and riders will encounter rough areas, icy patches and wet segments in low-lying areas. The Sno-Bunnies as well as surrounding clubs have been out packing the base. It is NOT RECOMMENDED to cross area lakes until the route across the lake is clearly marked. On Tuesday December 27th the Club is having a Breakfast/Brunch at the Presque Isle Pub, we hope to see you there. Remember, Ride with care and “Think Snow”

Snow! Yes, we have fresh snow! Our base took a beating last week but colder temps and a fresh delivery of 4 to 6 inches (less in south more to the north) of snow last night means we’ll have riding this weekend. Remember, trails are in early season condition and riders may encounter rough areas, icy patches and wet segments in low-lying areas. Our club as well as surrounding clubs has been out packing the base. It is NOT recommended to cross area lakes until the route across the lake is clearly marked. Ride with care and “Think Snow”

Welcome to the 2011-2012 Snowmobile Season! Wish we had a good snow report! We had enough snow for using our new trail packer but the warm weather has taken it’s toll on the base. Right now we’re waiting for snow. For a really good snow report check out this website http://home.centurytel.net/presque-isle-weather/ Here is the latest official snow report for Vilas County THE STATE FUNDED SNOWMOBILE TRAIL SYSTEM IN VILAS COUNTY OFFICIALLY OPENED AT NOON ON MONDAY 12 DECEMBER 2011. With minimal snow, the use of caution is strongly recommended. Trails are in early season condition and riders may encounter rough areas, icy patches and wet segments in low-lying areas. More snow is needed to enable area snowmobile clubs to provide the well groomed world class trails Vilas County is noted for. It is not recommended to cross area lakes until the route across the lake is clearly marked.
