Presque Isle and Winchester, Wisconsin Snowmobiling and Snowmobile Trail Reports

Welcome! There is a place in Wisconsin's famed Northwoods called Presque Isle and Winchester, a vast swath of forest and glacial lake country that deserves to be named "Wisconsin's Last Wilderness."

77 square miles of pine and hardwood forests, lakes and streams offer a four season vacationland that really only begins to tell the story. The top attraction is the natural splendor of the Northwoods, with a location that is immediately adjacent to Michigan's sprawling Ottawa National Forest and Wisconsin's 20,000 plus acres of Northern Highland State Forest

Presque Isle, Wisconsin Snowmobiling and Snowmobile Trail Conditions Reports
Welcome to March and the Best Snowmobile Conditions of the Season! It’s been a great season and it’s not over yet. Fresh snow and mild temperatures promise to make the First Weekend of March a perfect opportunity to enjoy EXCELLENT TRAIL CONDITIONS. Vilas County Trails will be open until the 31st of March but the conditions won’t be as perfect as they are right now. There are 40’s in the next week’s forecast and some of my favorite ‘Pit-Stops’ are already posting a Mid-March closing, so here’s a suggestion: How about taking advantage of perfect conditions, reduced trail traffic, great lodging opportunities, cheap gas, friendly folks and come north! We’ll be seeing you on the trails and REMEMBER “ride right”, stay on trail, and if you’re not familiar with the lake... don't go! Stay Tuned for Updates and “Think Snow”. Check out our new website with LIVE WEB-CAMS at http://snobunnies.com

It's the last week of February and I can honestly say we're looking at the BEST TRAIL CONDITIONS of the season. With over 6 inches of snow last week, subzero temps and nightly grooming, all trails are VERY GOOD plus 14 and lesser used trails are EXCELLENT! Continued below normal temperatures, more snow in the forecast and reduced trail traffic... these are the conditions that bring out "the locals"! In a few words... "this could be as good as it gets!" If you're thinking about coming north... "it's time to act!" When you ride, REMEMBER “ride right”, stay on trail, and if you’re not familiar with the lake... don't go! Stay Tuned for Updates and “Think Snow”. Check out our new website with LIVE WEB-CAMS at http://snobunnies.com.

Our guests are consistently saying, “VERY GOOD” when asked about our snowmobile trails and wasn’t last weekend a great time!? Cold and snow were the conditions and now, looking out the window one would think winter is going to last forever! But unfortunately all good things come to an end and winter is no exception. That nasty old sun is coming up earlier, stay up longer and its rays are getting stronger. So far our trail groomers have been able to fight off “old sol’s” advances but in less than a dozen day’s February will be history… and March isn’t always reliable. Thankfully, 4 inches of midweek snow last week brought our trail system back to VERY GOOD and if you didn’t take your Valentine snowmobiling last weekend, why not do that this week? When you ride, REMEMBER “ride right”, stay on trail, and if you’re not familiar with the lake... don't go! Stay Tuned for Updates and “Think Snow”. This coming weekend is Valentine’s Day and on Sunday, some lucky individual is going to win a NEW SNOWMOBILE! The Presque Isle/Winchester Sno-Bunnies have a Brunch at the SkyView Lodge on Sunday February 15th and at noon they will draw the ticket for a new 2015 Ski Doo Snowmobile. Tickets are still available for this raffle and information can be found on our website. This week also promises to be great for snowmobiling. Temperatures are going to be cold enough to keep the snow hard and firm with a forecast of 4 or more inches of midweek snow. Trails in Northwest Vilas County have been showing a lot of wear and are currently rated as GOOD. However, 4 inches of midweek snow should be perfect to bring the system back to VERY GOOD by the weekend. With only 3 weekends left in February, taking your Valentine Snowmobiling sounds perfect to me. If you ride, REMEMBER “ride right”, stay on trail, and if you’re not familiar with the lake... don't go! Stay Tuned for Updates and “Think Snow”. The first words from our guests are “It’s like Driving into winter!” Yes, Far North Central Wisconsin has an abundance of snow compared to the southern portion of the state and as I write this report, more snow is falling! Last weekend’s warmer temperatures and heavy snowmobile traffic exacted their toll, but “double pass” grooming has all trails west of Presque Isle in VERY GOOD condition. As I write… 6 East of Presque Isle in GOOD to condition Today’s snow has added 2 inches of fresh on top of last night’s grooming, so those conditions will improve. Midweek riding has been perfect with heavier traffic on the weekends. This week’s forecast has us inline a good chance of midweek snow and a cold weekend. I think conditions are nearly perfect for a visit to Presque Isle… REMEMBER “ride right”, stay on trail, and if you’re not familiar with the lake... don't go! Stay Tuned for Updates and “Think Snow”. January is going fast! Less than two weeks and we’ll be in February, the shortest month of the year! So if you’re planning a Snowmobile Vacation, it’s time to start packing. The conditions in Northwest Vilas County for snowmobiling are VERY GOOD to EXCELLENT. Heavy traffic last weekend pounded our trails, but our snow base is substantial and double shift grooming has brought them back to VERY GOOD CONDITION. Riders can expect some icing in corners and dry road crossings. Midweek riding has been perfect with heavier traffic on the weekends. This week’s forecast has us inline for normal January temps and a slight chance of midweek snow. I think conditions are nearly perfect for a visit to Presque Isle… REMEMBER “ride right”, stay on trail, and if you’re not familiar with the lake... don't go! Stay Tuned for Updates and “Think Snow”.

It’s “Derby Week” and for anyone who knows snowmobiling, Derby Week represents prime snowmobile time. Over a week of subzero temperatures coupled to an abundance of snow have created perfect trail conditions. Swamps and wet trail areas have frozen. Lake routes in Vilas and Iron County have been marked and even Lake Superior has been fringed with ice. I won’t say this is as good as it gets…. But it’s close! This week’s forecast is for more seasonal weather blended with several sunny days. Sounds like perfect snowmobiling. Currently our trails are rated as VERY GOOD to EXCELLENT. Some corners are showing ice and road crossings may be short on snow. REMEMBER “ride right”, stay on trail, and if you’re not familiar with the lake... don't go! Stay Tuned for Updates and “Think Snow”.

Happy New Year… and for snowmobile enthusiasts it is indeed a happy time! Presque Isle/Winchester Trails have an excellent snow base and with this intense cold, grooming will be completed on 100% of the trail system. Currently only a short section of TRAIL 14 WEST has been too soft for the groomer. Super cold temperatures are perfect for grooming! Which means the groomers can cross the swamps! Further with cold temps we see reduced trail traffic. This week’s forecast is for bitter cold blended with bursts of LES (lake effect snows) and a promise of warmer temperatures for the weekend. Sounds like perfect snowmobile conditions. Currently our trails are rated as VERY GOOD with a goal of EXCELLENT by the weekend. REMEMBER “ride right”, stay on trail, and if you’re not familiar with the lake... don't go! Stay Tuned for Updates and “Think Snow”.

Northwest Vilas County has an abundance of snow. The gauge in my yard shows 15.5 inches. Snowmobiler’s are reporting many trail sections are excellent riding however there is one caveat. Deep snow has kept some wet areas from deep frost. These wet areas are inaccessible to the groomer and can be quite rough. Every snowmobile club in the area has reported having these non-groomed, heavily rutted wet areas. Presque Isle/Winchester Trails are in GOOD to VERY GOOD condition, except for these short wet sections. REMEMBER ride cautiously, stay on trail, and if a lake is not marked... stay off! The Presque Isle/Winchester Club has a regular night time grooming schedule, so expect a possible encounter. The forecast is for temperatures staying below zero for the next several nights and a good chance for more snow! Stay Tuned for Updates and “Think Snow”.

After two exceptionally warm days and nights conditions have returned to typical December. Our trails are open and trail grooming has renewed the base. Fresh snow this week has helped change the trail conditions to FAIR and in some areas GOOD! REMEMBER... expect early trail conditions. Some area lakes still have open water! If it's not marked... stay off! IF YOU ride proceed with caution, expect some ruts, bumps, and ice! The Presque Isle/Winchester Club will have grooming equipment on the trails (conditions permitting) both during daylight and night so expect a possible encounter. The weather forecast shows temperatures staying below freezing and JOHN DEE. COM 5-10 DAY Snow forecast is very promising. Watch the weather… Sunday night and continuing into CHRISTMAS WEEK the forecast has a chance of snow every day! Stay Tuned for Updates and “Think Snow”.

After two exceptionally warm days and nights our 16 inches of snow has shrunk to 4!! Our groomed and packed trail sections have been reduced in some sections to ‘snirt’ (snow and dirt)… that’s the bad news… here’s the good news… Late last night the freezing rain turned to snow and today we have a fresh blanket of white… further, the “Big Lake” is forecasted to deliver 3 to 5 inches of LES (lake effect snow) in the next 24 hours and our trails are OPEN! . REMEMBER... expect early trail conditions. Our current trail conditions are being listed as POOR however, with the return of our grooming equipment and crew that status is likely to improve. Stay Tuned for Updates and “Think Snow”.

Welcome to the 2014-2015 Presque Isle/Winchester Snowmobile Season! Our Trails along with Snowmobile Trails in all of Vilas County will open on December 12 at 4pm. Currently the Presque Isle/Winchester trails are being rolled/panned and cleared for trail riding. With the early snow and mild temperatures many areas are without frost. Corridor 6 West of Presque Isle has deep ruts as a result of 4x4 vehicles ripping up the trail… riders should be ultra cautious on all trails during this early part of the season. This site will be updated frequently as conditions warrant. Ride with Caution and “Think Snow”
