Snowmobile Trail Report

Please Help Us Take Care of The Trails:

Well, Gogebic Area Grooming is now heading into its 6th year as the grooming entity of the Lake Gogebic area and although we’re doing well we need your help now more than ever.

We’ve been very fortunate to have quite a few “off-season snowmobilers” come all the way up here during this last fall to offer all sorts of help on our trails purely for love of the sport and we can’t thank you all enough.

Come this next fall we’ll be looking for man-hours to brush & sign trails again. Even with the trails all perfectly signed at this time, we always seem to need to put more up every year. Either the signs get stolen, damaged or just plain too old and need replacing: all this on over 157 miles of trails. Any amount of help would be more than welcome. Come on up and enjoy some of the best fall color you can find while helping out on your favorite trails…you won’t be sorry. If you’re interested in helping out just call George at 906-575-5555 and we’ll get you all set up.

But right now we’re in need of financial backing. The sponsorship dues we’ve established are minimal, just $20.00 for individual, $30.00 for family and $75.00 for commercial, but we’re also open to donations of any amount. These amounts will help in all the costs of running a grooming entity, such as repairs, wages, fuel, more repairs, insurance, parts, more repairs...you get the idea… Checks can be mailed to the address below.

We want to be very clear in that Gogebic Area Grooming is separate from The Lake Gogebic Area Chamber of Commerce and any dues or donations sent to Gogebic Area Grooming will be credited only towards a Gogebic Area Grooming membership.

We hope you enjoy our trails, our beautiful area and we hope to hear from you soon.

We thank you ahead of time for all your support.

Reporting on trail conditions for Gogebic Area Grooming: Trail conditions over the Lake Gogebic area have greatly improved over the last few days with the added accumulation of 4 to 8-inches of new snow (and even more in some areas north of the lake). Were expecting additional snowfall and a return to really cold temperatures on Monday. In fact, were expected to stay below 20-degrees for highs over the next 10 days! This should help freeze up any remaining wet areas. Groomers will be opening up the trail on 13 south again over the next couple of days. This will mean no more riding along East Shore Road. With the groomers just opening up the segment of 13 south between 8 east and the Root Cellar conditions over this area may be somewhat rough for a few days, but weve got plenty of snow for grooming the trail into good shape soon. With the opening of snowmobile trails in Wisconsin on Monday the 15th we will be running our groomers, on trail 1 south, all the way to the Michigan/Wisconsin border once again. Do watch out for a wet area between the Gogebic Lodge and the Hwy. 2 trail crossing. This next weeks temperatures should help take care of that problem. All other trails, 8 west, 8 east, 1 north and 13 north are all in great shape with plenty of snow and grooming. We are still working to move a section of trail 8 just north of Bergland; however, the old section is still open at this time. Watch out for workers & equipment in this area, along with new signs, over this next week. Thats all for now, keep checking our report for more updates as conditions change. For additional information about the Lake Gogebic area we invite you to visit the only official website of The Lake Gogebic Area Chamber of Commerce at www.LakeGogebicArea.com or call the chamber at 1-888-464-3242 (888-LAKEGOGEBIC). We look forward to seeing in our beautiful area soon. Have a great ride and a great day!

Reporting on trail conditions for Gogebic Area Grooming: Trails over the Lake Gogebic area are quickly improving with the addition of more snow almost everyday and very cold temperatures. For the most part the trails are running in good condition at this point. Groomers are running on all trails with drags now. We are almost done with the reroute just north of Bergland, hopefully by this weekend it will be all brushed and signed but continue to use caution through this spot. Remember that the trail portion of 13 south from trail 8 east to the Root Cellar will be run along both sides of East Shore Road, just until next Tuesday the 16th. You must ride with the traffic on each side and always use the speeds marked for this area. Were expecting an additional snow accumulation over tonight and Friday of up to 6-inchesmore good news for the trails! Thats all I have for now but Ill keep you posted on any changes and on the reroute north of Bergland. For additional Lake Gogebic information we invite you to visit the only official website of The Lake Gogebic Area Chamber of Commerce at www.lakegogebicarea.com. You can also see a view from the north end of Lake Gogebic through our webcam posted on the homepage of the chambers website. Keep checking back for more updates. Have a great ride and a great day!

Reporting on trail conditions for Gogebic Area Grooming: With the recent snowfall and colder than normal temperatures weve been experiencing we are now able to upgrade some of our trails to good condition. Trails 13 north, 102, 1 north (north of Bergland), 8 east and 8 west are all in good to very good condition. Trails 1 south (west shore of Lake Gogebic down to the Michigan/Wisconsin border) still has some wet spots that are preventing our groomers from running the entire length of the trail, but they are grooming where they can and are expecting to be on the whole trail by this upcoming weekend. Trail 13 south (east shore of Lake Gogebic down to trail 2) is still partially closed due to black powder hunting. The area of 13 south, from trail 8 east south to the Root Cellar, must be ridden alongside East Shore Road, running with traffic and using speeds posted. Trail 13 south resumes back in the woods south of the Root Cellar all the way to trail 2. Trail 100 (along the south end of the lake) is in fair to good condition. We do have a temporary trail closing on trail 8, just north of Bergland, where the trail heads towards Bergland. We are working to find a reroute and hope to have it open by this coming weekend. As it stands right now, the only access into Bergland is by ice. A new trail report will be run as soon as this situation is resolved. Weather forecasts for the next ten days continue to look great for setting the snowmobile trails up for another great snowmobile season. Colder than normal temperatures along with a call for snow practically every day is all good news and were excited to get started with the snowmobile season! Thats all for the season, for additional information on our area we invite you to visit the only official website of The Lake Gogebic Area Chamber of Commerce at www.LakeGogebicArea.com or call us at 1-888-464-3242 (or 888-Gogebic). Looking forward to seeing you all up on our beautiful trail system soon! Have a great ride and a great day.

Reporting on trail conditions for Gogebic Area Grooming: We’re presently under a winter storm warning and have received at least 7-inches of snow over the last 24 hours. We’re expecting high winds Saturday with very cold temperatures so please use caution while out in the elements as frostbite can occur quickly in these conditions. Also, travel may be difficult with blowing snow. That said, the weather we’ve been experiencing all week has really helped to set the trails up nicely, with the temps in the teens for highs and single digits or below zero for lows. We’ve also been receiving additional snow everyday, with the exception of maybe one day. The 10-day forecast is calling for similar weather with snow in the forecast for everyday! Yeah!! Groomers have been out everyday since early in the week on all trails. The portion of trail 13 south (east shore) will remain along the roadway from 8 east to the Root Cellar until Tuesday the 16th. But, you must ride with the traffic, on the side of the road at posted speed limits. Also, watch for logs alongside 13 south near where it intersects with trail 100. They are aligned on both sides of the trail, not obstructing the trail and will be removed soon. Even with the really cold temps we’ve been experiencing you should watch out for wet areas, especially in the woods for probably the next couple of weeks or so. These areas are usually spring fed and are always a little stubborn about freezing over. Nothing else to report in other areas of our trail system at this time, just remember to always stay on the marked trails and keep your speed reasonable. Always give the groomer the right of way and ride safely. We want to be sure everyone enjoys their trip to our beautiful area and comes back again and again. That’s all for now, keep coming back for continued trail updates as conditions change. For additional Lake Gogebic information we invite you to visit the only official website of The Lake Gogebic Area Chamber of Commerce at www.LakeGogebicArea.com or call 1-888-464-3242 (888-Gogebic). Have a great ride and a great day!

We received approximately 6-inches of new snow over Monday the 1st, with additional snow in the forecast everyday for the next week. Much colder temperatures are also expected, which will really help freeze up those creeks and swampy areas. The groomers are running, packing down the trails first before attaching the drags and grooming. If we get the expected snow this week we will definitely be out grooming by this weekend. Just remember that trail condition this early in the season will be poor with rough and wet spots. The snow we got on Monday was lake effect so it hit in some areas and all but missed other areas…so expect to ride through some thinner areas of snow as well as areas that may have up to a foot or more. I know I’m going to sound like a broken record, but please remain on the designated trails at all times. We risk loosing easements on private property if we don’t respect the owner’s rights. Also remember, what you take into the woods…take back out with you. Every year we have tons of garbage, blown belts, empty oil bottles and more that are left in the woods or along trails. Any business owner would let you throw away these items at their business, just ask. That’s all for now, thanks for checking our trail report - please keep checking back as I’ll update the report as often as I can or as conditions change. For additional information on Lake Gogebic please visit the only official website of The Lake Gogebic Area Chamber of Commerce at www.lakegogebicarea.com. Also, check out a view of Lake Gogebic through the chamber’s webcam, located at the northwest corner of the lake. See you soon… Wishing you a great ride and a great day!

This early in the season our trails will be mostly in poor condition. Although we’ve had a good amount of snowfall already there are a lot of wet areas in the woods to watch out for as well as swampy areas that typically freeze over later in December. This is nothing new to anyone who comes up early in the season, but we like to remind you all anyway. The weather predictions are calling for colder temperatures, as well as more snow everyday, as the week progresses. If conditions continue as expected the groomers should have all trails covered by this upcoming weekend. A lot will depend on the amount of snow and the wet conditions they find as they go. As far as brushing and signing, almost 100% of our trails have been covered so far. We’ve been lucky enough to have several people volunteer to work on the trails over this last fall. A huge “thank you” to all who gave of their time, equipment and know how, just for the love of the sport! All of these people traveled quite a distance to put in some long hard hours on our trails and we all appreciate it more than we can say. We’ve also been busy re-decking bridges in a couple of spots to keep them safe for crossing. The guys at the groomer garage have been busy putting new tracks on the groomers and checking them over so the groomers are ready to roll when we need them. We’d like to remind everyone of the importance of remaining on trails at all times to avoid loosing trail easements on private property. We are granted easements by private landowners and must respect them and their property. Also, remember to always give the groomer the right of way. Believe it or not, it’s pretty easy for a groomer to get stuck by pulling off of a trail.
