Ironwood is the Western Gateway to Michigans Upper Peninsula, the major city in the area with a population of over 6000.   Hiawatha.jpg (4408 bytes)The entire Gogebic County has a population of just under 20,000 but serves 50,000 people within a fifty mile radius.  There is plenty of shopping, cultural and recreational opportunities too.  Ironwood is a major four season recreation area rich in natural resources.  In summer, the area offers camping, hunting, fishing, boating, hiking, mountain biking, and sightseeing.   In winter, Big Snow Country offers hundreds of miles of snowmobile trails, and four major ski areas within a 15 minute drive of Ironwood.  The region is blessed with plenty of snow for excellent and consistent winter recreation fun.

The area boasts the Black River Forest Scenic Byway, including numerous waterfalls and the Copper Peak Ski Flying Complex.   In the summer and fall, Copper Peak offers chairlift and elevator rides to the top of the worlds largest ski flying hill.

The nearly one million acres of Ottawa National forest (actually 954,000 acres) offers 27 campgrounds, access to 35 scenic waterfalls, and miles of hiking trails in the North Country National Scenic Recreation Trail.

Historic buildings and museums are numerous in downtown Ironwood.   A self-guided tour map explaining some of these old buildings can be picked up the Ironwood Chamber of Commerce office that is staffed inside the Depot Museum.  The Depot, recently restored, holds much of the history of this mining and logging community.  The renovated Historic Ironwood Theater in downtown Ironwood is also well worth a visit.  The theater offers over 100 shows a year!  The Memorial Building with granite floors and stone columns, houses the city government and is open for walk-in guests.  A special second floor history room has beautiful displays of area heritage too.

Summer events in the area include Festival Ironwood in July, the Upper Great Lakes Renaissance Faire in July, the Gogebic County Fair in August.  Winter brings the Jack Frost Celebration in early December which includes a delightful wintertime parade down Ironwoods Main Street.

(12-30-03) Some groomers are out where they can to try and smooth what they can of the trails. It sounds like most of the GRTA groomers are out, Lake Gogebic is grooming North of the lake and Silver City is grooming some of there trails that have snow. Trail conditions range from poor to maybe fair in some areas, there are lots of bare spots, thin on snow and some water spots. Talked to some sleders last night one group said it wasn't to good and another group said they had a good time. I guess it all depends on what you expect of the trails and how bad you want to ride. Forecast is calling for snow showers on and off through the week but doesn't look to good at this time. Sam

(12-28-03) It rained a little last night and temps today are going to be warm. Forecast is calling for colder temps starting tonight with snow for most of the week. Snow totals don't look to good till later in the week. Went for a drive to check out the trails around town, they don't look as bad as I thought they would. There are lots of bare spots and areas with dirt, the big problem is going to be water in some areas. If we get some snow and the groomers can get out they may be able to fix the trails so they are ride able. It is going to take a good dump of snow to get them back into decent shape. We can only keep are fingers crossed and hope the snow comes soon. Some areas are going to take less snow to get them going and others more. Sam

12-27-03) The warm weather is taking its toll on the snow, it has settled quite a bit and the streets are starting to get bare but we still have a good amount of snow on the ground. Most of the groomers are parked till it gets cold to help save the trails. Took a drive to check out the main trail in Ironwood and does not look bad which surprised me, its orange in color but who every groomed last night did a good job considering the warm temp last night. Trail conditions will very from poor to good with bare spots and thin areas I just hope the swamps don't open up. The forecast is good news, temp will cool off Saturday after mid-night with snow starting on Sunday evening and cold temps starting on Monday with snow for most of the week. So it sounds like cold and snow for next week and the groomers should be back out Sunday evening or the latest on Monday. Sam

(12-21-03) What a great day to ride sunny but got a little warm high in the 30's. Trail 2 from Ironwood to Wakefield was good with a few areas a little on the rough side. From Wakefield to Marenisco was great, from Marenisco to trail 13 which goes along the east shore of Lake Gogebic was great also except for about 5 miles just East of Marenisco. Trail 13 overall was good to very good except where they cut a new trail as this was a little thin on snow and a little rough. There are some thin spots and some bare corners. Overall the ride was great with 90 to 95% of the trails from good to very good. Sam

(12-17-03) Total snowfall was 8 inches which will help to build the base up, total snowfall for the year is at 67 inches. Trails in the area should be in fair to good shape. More snow is forecast for the week but how much we will have to wait and see. Lakes are not safe to ride on and watch out for wet areas and deer on the trails.

More snow is on the way with 3 to 4 inches already and the forecast is calling for up to 10 inches today and tonight. If we get the 10 inches of new snow this will help to get the trails in good shape by the weekend.

(12-14-03) Rode 95 miles today and here is the real scoop on the trails. From Ironwood to Bessemer trail #2 some small bumps not bad at all with some thin spots along the trail. From Bessemer to Wakefield trail #2 was a little on the rough side not overly bad and a few more thin spot. Wakefield to Marenisco trail #2 was great mostly flat with some thin spots and some icey corners. then we took 11 south to Winchester was a little rough not bad as it was only groomed once to break it open and clear off any trees on the trail. From Winchester we rode to Manitowish which was great some thin spots but very good from The Iron county line trail 17 into Mercer was very very bad as it seems it was not groomed at all. This could be do a very long wet area that they are waiting to freeze up. From Mercer to about 8 miles trail 17 out of Hurley was very rough from 8 miles out it was great. Overall about 70 miles was from very good to good with 25 miles as being bad. As this is the first weekend of grooming not to bad all. Sam

(12-11-03) Another 6 to 8 inches with the forecast calling for another 3 to 5 tonight in to Friday with colder temps, there is 17 inches on the ground. Most groomers will be out by the weekend but it will take awhile to get them in shape. There are a few cautions, wet areas and lots of deer on the trails so keep your eye's open and drive safe. Sam

(12-02-03) No new snow, trails are open but groomers are not out as there is not enough snow and is limited to a small area. They did roll some of the trails to help build a base but will not go out and groom till we get more snow. Forecast is calling for some snow showers on and off and temps in the mid 30's for the next week to 10 days. So far the forecast is not looking good and can only hope it changes for the better. Sam

(11-24-03) The big snow missed us but we did get 6 to 10 inches of heavy snow. Forecast is calling for light snow on and off through the week with temps in the high 20's to low 30's so the snow should stay for now. Lets hope this is the start of winter with lots of snow. Sam

So far the big storm is just that all talk and no snow. 1 to 2 inches so far, say it will happen in to Monday but so far not looking good just another one that went around us at this time. Keeping fingers crossed that it does hit us today and Monday but I'm not counting on it. Sam

A pile of lake-effect snow is on its way, maybe as much as 12 inches. Don't run out to the garage and pull the covers off the sleds yet as the trails will not open until early December. We'll keep you posted!
