Lake
Gogebic is Michigan's largest inland lake located in the far western
end of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Lake Gogebic is a
four-season vacation gem - still undiscovered by many. Lake Gogebic
is in two counties and in two time zones. The north half of the lake
is in Ontonagon County, Bergland Township, and the Eastern Time
zone. The south half of the lake is in Gogebic County, Marenisco
Township, and the Central Time zone.

In 13,380 acres of prime fishing water, there are walleye,
smallmouth bass, northern pike, jumbo perch and some whitefish.
Throughout the season, the Chamber hosts a tagged fish contest with
thousands of dollars in prizes.

This region is also a prime hunting hot spot for deer, bear,
small game and birds. The autumn colors are spectacular. Waterfalls
abound and many are very easily accessed. Honeymooners will enjoy
searching out the more remote falls. Lake Superior's shores are
close by too.
Families
will enjoy Lake Gogebic's summer water sports, camping, sightseeing
and hiking the surrounding timberland. The area is full of historic
sites and history. The wildflowers and wildlife are everywhere.
Biking, 4-wheelers and walking are a way of life.

Winter is a "world of its own" with an annual
snowfall of nearly 300 inches. Lake Gogebic is situated within a
vast snowmobile trail system extending throughout the Upper
Peninsula. Cross country ski trails are abundant and five major
downhill ski facilities are less than a hour's drive. It is a great
place to use snowshoes.
The
evenings are often full of Northern Lights and a wolf's cry. The
dress is casual and the attitudes are friendly. Bring sweaters for
summer evenings and expect beautiful warm days. Winters are harsh
and fall is cool, but the seasons are amazing.

Whitetail Lodging on Lake Gogebic
Sorry to say that, although the trails officially can open on December 1st, our trails have not received enough snow...yet, to make snowmobiling very enjoyable. And definitly not enough snow for the groomers to head out and start grooming. We're also still working on finishing up the last of the signing and brushing on the trails, so don't be in too much of a hurry to get up here just yet. Temperatures over the next week are predicted mostly in the 20's and 30's during the daytime, unfortunately it looks like possibly high 30's for late in the week - but we'll let you know what's happening weather-wise as the week progresses. Keep thinking snow!

Well, hopefully it won't be long now. Temperatures are finally dropping into the 30's and 20's for daytime temps and we've got a forecast that's calling for up to a foot of snow on Monday the 24th - which puts us just one week away from the official opening of the snowmobile trails! But, as most of you know, it takes a lot more than a foot of snow to make a trail. So keep your fingers crossed that this trend continues.
IMPORTANT NOTICE - The grooming entity that was "The Lake Gogebic Area Chamber of Commerce" has divided from the Chamber and is now become "Gogebic Area Grooming, Inc.". Although the Chamber will continue to be involved through the board of directors in the new club and will continue to support the new grooming entity, the Chamber will no longer be the grant sponsor for our area. The Gogebic Area Grooming, Inc. will be accepting members for all of you who'd like to support a club that takes care of all 160 miles of trails for the area surrounding Lake Gogebic. The business membership is $50.00 yearly and an associate membership is $25.00 yearly. Checks can be made out to "Gogebic Area Grooming, Inc." and mailed to: Box 114 / Bergland, MI 49947.
Also - another important notice: Gogebic Area Grooming will be taking over the trail section that runs from Marenisco south to the Wisconsin border, just north of Presque Isle. This change in trail responsibility came in too late to make the printing of the snowmobile maps, so on the maps it looks like that section is closed. It will remain open, in fact much work has been done on that section by our group in order to improve the trail. Trail #102 is undergoing some changes, also. This will improve the route...again. We're working with a new logging company in that area to reroute, and they are being extremely cooperative with us. Watch for changes on the south end of Trail #13 South, this trail no longer crosses Hwy. 2 but runs along the pipe line instead. There will also be some changes for snowmobile traffic in the town of Bergland. Watch for posted maps in area businesses and signed trails through Bergland to direct you. We can not stress enough how important it remains that these directions be respected as well as the residents of Bergland. Remember that this is a residential area and slow speeds are essential!
One other big change, which actually isn't our trail but we feel it's important to mention, is that the section of Trail #11 that runs from Hwy. 28 to where #11 meets #102 has been permanently closed due to a private landowner dispute. This means anyone heading up to The Porkies from the direction of Wakefield area will now need to come all the way to Lake Gogebic where you can pick up Trail #102 and head north up to the remaining section of Trail #11 that will stay open.
That's all for now...keep checking back for more updates.

A pile of lake-effect snow is on its way, maybe as much as 12
inches. Don't run out to the garage and pull the covers off
the sleds yet as the trails will not open until early
December. We'll keep you posted!
