The trail conditions in the "Snowmobile Capital of the World...Eagle River, WI are for the most part Poor. It does not look good for any real snow in the forecast.
There is riding as I report in the woods & in the far north parts of Vilas County. For that reason the TRAILS REMAIN OPEN. .
The Vilas County Snowmobile Alliance will meet on Wednesday, March 17, 2010. At that time rep's from each club will take a look at trail condtions throughout the County & the weather forecast & then vote on whether trails will remain open or close.
Grooming has stopped.
Orange reflective barrels have been removed from Catfish Lake Loop Trail & the Eagle Lake Trail.
At this point I will NOT be updating the trail report everyday UNLESS THE CONDITIONS CHANGE.....like a great big snow storm! That would be teriffic.
I would really like to see a March SNOW STORM so I could ride at least one more time!

The trail conditions in the "Snowmobile Capital of the World...Eagle River, WI are for the most part Poor. Some Fair. It does not look good for any real snow in the forecast.
There is riding as I report in the woods & in the far north parts of Vilas County. For that reason the TRAILS REMAIN OPEN. Each winter sledding season there are questions on how long the trails can remain open.
SNOWMOBILE TRAILS IN VILAS COUNTY WILL REMAIN OPEN, conditions permitting, UNTIL 12 MIDNIGHT ON WEDNESDAY, MARCH 31ST. The Vilas County Snowmobile Alliance will meet on Wednesday, March 17, 2010. At that time rep's from each club will take a look at trail condtions throughout the County & the weather forecast & then vote on whether trails will remain open or close.
"Adventure Sledding" is in order for this time of the year. You might have to trailer to a spot & ride from there. You will definitely experience good, bad & even ugly!!!!
Grooming has stopped until we get more SNOW fall.
Catfish Lake Loop & Eagle Lake Trail are smooth & covered with lots of SNOW. Believe or not there is no surface slush. This must be because it is getting cold at night. Remember to stay by the orange reflective marker barrels.
At this point I will NOT be updating the trail report everyday UNLESS THE CONDITIONS CHANGE.....like a great big snow storm! That would be teriffic.
THINK MORE SNOW & COLD! Let the Snow Dance begin!

It is a sunny Thursday morning with temps at 11 degrees. The trails in Eagle River are in real need for SNOW. Conditions are Poor to Fair in most areas with the exception of woods/out in the country riding.
There is riding as I report in the woods & in the far north parts of Vilas County. For that reason the TRAILS REMAIN OPEN. Each winter sledding season there are questions on how long the trails can remain open.
SNOWMOBILE TRAILS IN VILAS COUNTY WILL REMAIN OPEN, conditions permitting, UNTIL 12 MIDNIGHT ON WEDNESDAY, MARCH 31ST
We are at that point of "adventure sledding". Trails in & near town or along roads are poor with a few a fair. Out farther conditions do improve but all trails need more snow. It's time for one of the March "dumps" of wet snow!
Grooming has stopped until we get more SNOW fall.
Catfish Lake Loop & Eagle Lake Trail are smooth & covered with lots of SNOW. No need to talk about surface slush as it is way too cold for that. Stay by the orange reflective marker barrels. There are ice fisherman out on both lakes so give them a wide berth. 100 feet is good.
At this point I will NOT be updating the trail report everyday UNLESS THE CONDITIONS CHANGE.....like a great big snow storm! That would be teriffic.

It is Sunday morning & wouldn't you know it it SNOWED over night & it is still SNOWING right now. About 2 inches over night. So for those of you who are upnorth stay a bit longer & enjoy the new SNOW.
We are at that point of "adventure sledding" because more SNOW is definitely needed. Lots Fair & Poor Trails right now. A very few Good trails.

Start of another winter weekend in Eagle River! It's 10 degrees at 9am. Light snow in the forecast for the weekend. Some snow showers some Lake Effect snow off & on through the weekend. 2 maybe 3 inches for the weekend.
Not rating the trails because conditions are different all over. Read the rest of the report for riding ideas. Rule of thumb would be not good in town or wide open spaces. Woods riding & south side of a road trail OK to GOOD. Hard to do reports this time of year.
Trail Boss Tom sent out the grooming equipment last night to cut the rough areas & pan the rest. I can only speak to Trail 10E along Hwy 70E of Eagle River. It is smooth & loose snow covered this AM on the south side, that's the 1 way going east. There are "burn throughs" on the north side because someone out there turned the outside light again! I have not been able to ride this mid-week. Riders tell me that going east, northeast & south are best bets. Have riders from Middleton, WI & Cascade, IA riding from the motel & will get you a report on what they found on Saturday. I will get out on Saturday to see for myself.
Trails 10E to Trail 11 to Three Lakes or Trail 10E to Alvin/Nelma & Phelps. Trail 6, 8 west to Land 0' Lakes. Also 2 in the Boudler Jct area. Are what riders at the motel have ridden.

Thursday, February 25, 2010 & it is a cold one this morning...8 below zero at 8:15am! Light Lake Effect Snow overnight east of Eagle River on Trail 10E & south on Catfish Lake Loop.
I'm not rating the trails because the conditions are all over the place.

About 2 maybe 3 inches of new SNOW overnight. SNOWING lightly now. This was enough for the groomers to go out last night. Randy & Dale did a great job. Trails 10E & 13/the grade heading south looked good & smooth. One groomer down for repairs so those guys did a bit of extra work last night.
Single digit temps overnight & 13 degrees at about 8:30am. High of 19 today 3 tonight.
Sno-Eagles ride today. Should have reports on conditions for you in the morning.
Catfish Lake Loop & Eagle Lake Trail are smooth & covered with lots of SNOW. No need to talk about surface slush as it is way too cold for that. Stay by the orange marker barrels.

Today's report is much the same as Monday.
Tuesday morning & we are waiting for SNOW. Temps just jumped to 17 degrees & it is overcast! Thank you to who ever turned off the lights outside. 2-3 inches of snow hope it's more. In the meantime here are some riding ideas:
Trail 17S, 7 going into Sugar Camp are a good bet. Trail 10E going east on the one way to the Fuel Station is icy but rideable to where the trail turns into a 2 way trail. The one way going toward town one way is Fair at best but Poor too. Taking 2 way 10E heading toward Phelps or Three Lakes are GOOD in the woods. Lakes in Three Lakes are smooth & have NO SURFACE SLUSH as of this morning. Heading northwest from Phelps to Land 0' Lakes, Boulder Jct. guys told me Trail 6, 2 & 8 pretty good. Road crossings trails along the roads & in towns are POOR. Some are Fair.
Catfish Lake Loop & Eagle Lake Trail are smooth & covered with lots of SNOW. No surface slush as of this morning. Stay by the orange marker barrels.
Yesterday the 7am morning temps in Rhinelander was 20. Here in Eagle River it was 2! Last week we had 6 below one morning & Land 0' Lakes had 17 below. Keep that in mind when you are searching for riding!
THINK MORE SNOW & COLD! It would be good if the evil sun went away too! I need to hear the SNOW DANCE way up here!

Ok, before I start the report for Monday morning I need to find out....WHO IS IN CHARGE OF TURNING OFF THE LIGHTS???? That sun has been out way too much. Anyway here is the report:
Monday morning in Eagle River & we wait for snow. There is 1-4 inches in the forecast for Tuesday. That would be great. In the meantime while we wait the trails conditions are a wide range. They are either GOOD or really not even OK. Have not seen this before. There really is no in between. I rated the conditions Fair because I just didn't know what else to rate it at. Where it's good it's good. Where it's bad it's bad.
Trail 17S, 7 going into Sugar Camp are a good bet. Trail 10E going east on the one way to the Fuel Station is icy but rideable to where the trail turns into a 2 way trail. 3 below zero at 9:30am & sun is out. Very hard to rate them this morning. Exposed to the sun trails are Fair to Poor. In the woods under cover trails are still in GOOD condition. Next snow is MOnday or Tuesday. No totals yet. Stay tuned.
Groomers were out again last night in Sno-Eagles Country. Panned with some cutting of the chop. The sun is dropping the snow total. Log hauling continues on Trail 10/13 so as I have been reporting that area is icy & thin on snow. This is only the section where Trail 10 & 13 run together.
The hard frozen snow base is in place with loose SNOW on top. With the sun out again today conditions will vary from trail to trail.

10 degrees this morning with sun. Trails right now are in GOOD condition.
Groomers were out again last night in Sno-Eagles Country. The drivers just got in & reported no problem areas. Log hauling continues on Trail 10/13 so as I have been reporting that area is icy & thin on snow. This is only the section where Trail 10 & 13 run together. Trail Boss Tom has been out sledding everyday since Saturday. Today they are headed up north to the Land 0' Lakes Trails & parts west. Trying to ride the entire County this week! I've been cleaning rooms so no riding for me but he reports GOOD on average. Some EXCELLENT & some FAIR. A normal winter!
The hard frozen snow base is in place with loose SNOW on top. With the sun out today conditions will vary from trail to trail. Will have to wait & see how things fair at the end of the day.
Catfish Lake Loop & Eagle Lake Trail are smooth & covered with lots of SNOW. Stay by the orange marker barrels.

Light snow over night. Trails are in EXCELLENT to GOOD condition. If you aren't riding....why not?
All trails were groomed once again last night. The new SNOW has made grooming fun for the drivers. Wish I could go out riding. The trails are really in great shape overall !
The only trail that I would rate as FAIR is trail 10/13. The section where the 2 trails run together. It is a sort of short cut & crosses the Wisconsin River by Snowmobile Bridge. There has been logging & log hauling in that area so it has been plowed. It's pretty slippery & has less snow than all other areas.
Catfish Lake Loop & Eagle Lake Trail are smooth & covered with lots of SNOW. Stay by the orange marker barrels.
THINK MORE SNOW & COLD!
Plan to finally get out & ride later this week. See ya on the trails!

Tuesday morning & the Trails are in EXCELLENT to GOOD condition. If you aren't riding....why not?
All trails were groomed last night. The new SNOW has made grooming fun for the drivers. Wish I could go out riding. So I think you should come on up for a mid-week ride & ride for me! The trails are truly terrific!
I was out riding this weekend & really the only trail that I would rate as FAIR is trail 10/13. The section where the 2 trails run together. It is a sort of short cut & crosses the Wisconsin River by Snowmobile Bridge. There has been logging & log hauling in that area so it has been plowed. It's pretty slippery & has less snow than other area. On Saturday as I rode through there as you got closer to the bridge it improved to GOOD but as soon as I crossed the bridge & rode about maybe 800 feet past the bridge it went back to FAIR.
Rode both Eagle Lake Trail & Catfish Lake Loop & they are pretty smooth & safe by the orange barrels.

Monday morning & it is SNOWING in Eagle River. 4 new inches of SNOW on the ground with more SNOW falling right now at 8:30am. 2-4 more inches of SNOW today! Trails are in EXCELLENT to GOOD condition.
All trails were groomed last night. It was neat to see freshly groomed trail with new snow on top. Wish I could go out riding. So I think you should come on up for a mid-week ride. The trails are truly terrific!

THINK MORE SNOW & COLD!
Plan to finally get out & ride again later this week. See ya on the trails!

Trails are in GOOD to EXCELLENT condition. 3 degrees this morning. High in the mid-20's. Sun is out right now but should go behind the clouds. Good.
Full grooming schedule continued last night. Hard frozen snow base with loose snow on top. The hard snow base is icy in many areas so slow down not only in the corners but everywhere. Even if you have picks on your track. Remember to stay on your side of the trail.
The sun is set to out to day so trails exposed to the sun will down grade a bit.
Catfish Lake Loop & Eagle Lake Trail in Sno-Eagles Country are safe by the orange reflective barrels. Snow covered & very few rough stops if any. Actually about as smooth as I've seen them in a while.
Log hauling continues on Trail 10/13 west of the snowmobile bridge. It is FAIR this morning.
USA HOCKEY Pond Hockey Championships started Friday on Dollar Lake by the Chanticleer. You can ride there by sled using Trail 10E to Trail 1 which runs along side of Dollar Lake Rd. You can also come from over the Eagle Lake Trail too. Games start at 9am to about 4pm today, Saturday. Sunday 9am to about 3pm.

Snowing again today. About an inch yesterday. We'll take it. Trails are a wide range...GOOD to FAIR on average. There are EXCELLENT trails too. The base is hard frozen snow covered with loose snow. More on some trails & less on others. The trails are "fast" so would be good to slow down not just in the corners but everywhere. Even if you have picks.
Groomer guys were out last night. Trails set very good. We are heading into single digits nights for a while. Drivers love that as the trails really set up!
Catfish Lake Loop & Eagle Lake Trails are smooth & safe by the orange barrels. It is bumpy at the entrance to Catfish at the 12 Pines entrance. We don't groom that or the lakes.
10/13 still has log hauling. Seems to be taking awhile. Icy there. Watch for trucks.
The Sno-Eagles Weekend Away is this weekend. Members are riding from Eagle River & some from Watersmeet. Great we are getting more SNOW!
Tomorrow is the weekly Sno-Eagles Ride. Meet at 9am in town on Trail 13/the grade by the Railroad Depot. You don't have to be a club member to ride.

Trails are in GOOD to FAIR condition. Lots of sled traffic over the weekend. Happy to report it is SNOWING lightly right now. Inch or 2 today. More SNOW tomorrow & Wednesday. Beginning tomorrow night the temperatures at night will drop to the single digits. Great for setting up the trails after grooming.
As for grooming, everything groomed again last night. Loose SNOW on top of the base. The base icy in a lot of areas so please slow down. Even if you have picks you will find it icy especially in the corners. There was fatality in Boul Jct & one in Forest County this past weekend. Both hit trees please....be safe & slow down.
The lake trails in Sno-Eagles Country are safe by the orange reflective barrels. Do not ride on lakes that are not designated trails which means they have to be on a trail map. Be safe.
Log hauling continues on Trail 10/13 west of the snowmobile bridge. Very ICY be careful.

Sunday & the end of another great weekend of sledding! Lots of riders this weekend. Trails are in GOOD to FAIR condition.
The temps have been in the mid-20's during the day & 10-14 at night. That will change starting Tuesday. Low 20's during the day & single digits at night. The other good news is SNOW starting tonight. SNOW for the next few days. Totals to follow.
Grooming will continue every night. The new SNOW & colder temps will bring great grooming results. Single digits get the trails to set up tight & frozen. New SNOW will put more loose SNOW lubrication on top of the hard frozen base!
Lastly the trails are icy under the loose SNOW on top. Can be slippery especially in the corners. You may "skate" in the corners evern with picks. Please for your safety & others slow down & be safe.

It's Friday......got your sled ready to go? Conditions are great for sledding!
The trails are GOOD to FAIR. In fact many riders are reporting that the trails out of town are in EXCELLENT condition. All are covered with a hard snow surface. The excellent trails have lots of loose snow & tend to be in the woods however the grade/Trail 13 heading south has a lot of snow. The Good trails have plenty of loose snow. The Fair trails have less or no loose snow & may be a bit icyier underneath. There is snirt at some of the road crossings. Icy under the snow so have to slow down on some of the trails. I like to call 'em "fast".
Catfish Loop safe & the Eagle Lake Trail are in good shape by the barrels. Remember if your map doesn't have a marked trail on a lake or there or no markers on a lake it isn't a trail & can not be consered safe.
Grooming last night with all 3 pieces of equipment & drags. Look great as I drove my Excursion into town. Yes, I can't ride 'til tomorrow!

HOLY MOLY is it COLD today! It's now 17 below zero! High of 12 degrees. Really going have to work to get to 12. About 2-3 inches of wet snow fell on Sunday into Monday. More Lake Snow on Monday & Tuesday. Maybe about 4 more inches for the 2 days. Thursday night less than 1 inch out at my home on Trail 10E. Very light Lake Effect earlier this morning.
On average for the 100 miles of Sno-Eagles Country I am rating them FAIR. Some are GOOD. There are a few POOR. Check out the rest of the report for a bit more details.
On Sunday Trail Boss Tom had all 3 groomers out panning all trails & cutting in a few areas for a full grooming. All frozen tights & looked flat & with no crusty icy snow for the 1st time in a while. Back to grooming every night. Combination of panning & cutting depending on the trail. It's cold so the trails are icy underneath.
Now for Trail 10/13 West yep it's rough, choppy & very icy. That area was plowed to allow the truck log hauling for a logging job out there. It will take a lot to get that back into shape. If the drivers cut too much with the drag blades they will completely breakdwon the ice & pull up even more dirt. So if you ride out there expect an adventure. Trail 3 is a better bet although it is getting more traffic because of the 10/13 situation. Up north farther where 10 & 13 split it's better. There is log hauling on Mathwig Rd. The trucks are crossing both Trail 10 & Trail 13 but not driving on the trail. Trail 17 is also a good bet.
Have not gone west or south myself but have heard Sugar Camp Trails are in pretty good shape. No report on the trails to the west.
In town the grade-Trail 13 as of right now it frozen icy covered snow with the lake effect on top. So there is lubrication. This goes both north & south.
Trail 10E from off the grade east is ok all the way to Nobbes station. As you go back into the woods conditions are better. Heading out & hooking up to Three Lakes & Alvin/Nelma/Phelps trails you will find a good ride. If you take the 9 Mile Trail to Three Lake instead of Kimble Creek Trail there is some road running. That is a bit ragged.
Catfish Lake Loop & Eagle Lake Trails are marked with orange reflective barrels. Stay by them to assure you are safe. No surface slush because it is really cold!!!! REMEMBER THAT IF THERE ARE NO MARKERS ON A LAKE OR YOUR MAP DOES NOT SHOW A TRAIL OVER A LAKE....IT IS NOT SAFE TO RIDE ON.
Keep doing the SNOW DANCE! I can't hear you! Let's keep that sun under wraps too!
See ya on the trails!

Report for today is pretty much the same. It's winter again in Eagle River! HOLY MOLY is it COLD today! 7 below right now. High of 5 degrees. At this rate might not get there. About 2-3 inches of wet snow fell on Sunday into Monday. More Lake Snow on Monday & Tuesday. Maybe about 4 more inches for the 2 days. Overnight less than 1 inch out at my home on Trail10E. When I got home last night it was very clear & the moon so bright you could almost get away without headlights! Definitely didn't need the deck light on.
On Sunday Trail Boss Tom had all 3 groomers out panning all trails & cutting in a few areas. All frozen tights & looked flat & with no crusty icy snow for the 1st time in a while. Back to grooming every night. Combination of panning & cutting depending on the trail.
In town the grade-Trail 13 as of right now it frozen icy covered snow with the lake effect on top. So there is lubrication. This goes both north & south.
Trail 10E from off the grade east is ok to ragged until you get to the 1 way sections. Heading east is better than coming back to town. When get into the woods past Nobbe's it improves dramatically. Trails 6 going toward Phelps/Alvin/Nelma is good & Trail 11 to Three Lakes are good too.
Keep doing the SNOW DANCE & THINK COLD! I can't hear you! Let's keep that sun under wraps too!
See ya on the trails!

Winter weather has returned to Eagle River. It is 0 at 8:25am with a high of 8 degrees today & below zero tonight. The cold will continue all week. No new SNOW over night. Lake Effect is in the forecast for tonight into tomorrow. 1-3 inches.
Trail Boss Tom sent out the groomers again last night. For the most part the drivers are panning the trails. Where there is chop or bumps they are cutting.
Hard to rate the trails. All sorts of conditions out there. Fair is what I am going to average them out at. In town they are now covered with snow & icy. There is loose snow on top of the icy base. All trails every where are icy under the snow cover. Be aware of that, especially in the corners.
Log hauling continues on trail 10/13 west of the Wisconsin River Snowmobile Bridge. That area is very thin on snow & extremely icy. Log hauling on Mathwig Rd is also going on. The truck are crossing over Trails 10 & 13 after the 2 trails split a part heading north. Fair amount of chop on these 2 trails. Working on cutting the chop when grooming. Trail 3 a good bet.
Keep doing the SNOW DANCE & THINK COLD! I can't hear you! Let's keep that sun under wraps too!
See ya on the trails!

It's good to report more SNOW overnight. The SNOW was a mix of regular SNOW & Lake Effect SNOW. On my deck railing on Hwy 70E & Trail 10E about 3 inches of new SNOW. Snowing lightly right now on the Catfish Lake Loop.
We have reached the high for today & it is windy. Cold front is moving in. Below zero tonight & about 10 degrees tomorrow. This will carry on through Sunday according to the weather guys.
Trail Boss Tom sent out the groomers last night. For the most part the drivers were panning the trails. A few areas there was cutting to breakdown the bumps. The old crusty snow is now covered with new wet snow. The wet snow breaks down that crusty stuff allowing the panning to really smooth things out. The COLD coming in will set up the trails so that any SNOW we get will show more & more improvement to the trails. Trail 10E was very smooth this morning.
Hard to rate the trails. All sorts of conditions out there. Fair is what I am going to average them out at. In town they are poor. All are icy. Be aware of that, especially in the corners.
Keep doing the SNOW DANCE & THINK COLD! I can't hear you! Let's keep that sun under wraps too!

Monday morning & we do have new SNOW in Eagle River. The way it SNOWED yesterday we should have a foot on the ground but it was very wet moisture filled SNOW so 2-3 new inches of SNOW on the ground. It is SNOWING again this morning.
Temperature will continue to drop all day. 8 degrees for an over night temperature & a high of 13 tomorrow & below zero tomorrow night. This will continue all week.
Trail Boss Tom will fire up the groomers tonight. All 100 miles of trails in Sno-Eagles Country will be panned tonight. The old crusty snow is now covered with new wet snow. The wet snow breaks down that crusty stuff allowing the panning to really smooth things out. The COLD coming in will set up the trails so that any SNOW we get will show more & more improvement to the trails.

It's Saturday morning & in Eagle River is still in a holding pattern in Eagle River. Waiting for the snow forecast for the end of the weekend into next week.
Rating Trail Conditions is hard right now. The north grade in Eagle River is in poor condition. I'd suggest using Trail 3 if you are heading to Conover. The trail in the heart of town by Ice Castle & south is icy but covered. Making your way east off the grade(Trail 13)to 10E a bit rugged until you get to the one-way section. One-way heading east is for the most part covered. When you are out about 5 miles & move back into the Two-way trail fair conditions. Conditions go from fair to good as you make your way north & west. Trail 6 & 8 are good bets. Using the Lake Trails which have no surface slush is also a good bet.
When the SNOW comes in Trail Boss Tom will have the groomer guys fire up the groomers again.
The log hauling continues on Trail 10/13 west of the Snowmobile Bridge. Log hauling continues on Mathwig Rd. The trucks will be crossing over both Trail 10 & Trail 13. Won't be driving on either of the trails. Watch for truck hauling signs.
Catfish Lake Loop & Eagle Lake Trails are marked with orange reflective barrels. Stay by them to assure you are safe. Still no slush just really flat riding. REMEMBER THAT IF THERE ARE NO MARKERS ON A LAKE OR YOUR MAP DOES NOT SHOW A TRAIL OVER A LAKE....IT IS NOT SAFE TO RIDE ON.
Keep doing the SNOW DANCE & THINK COLD! I can't hear you! Let's keep that sun under wraps too!

Well the temps have gone in the right direction. Near single digits overnight. 15 at 8:50 am. Icy frost on trees. Very pretty! NO SUN right now. Was getting pretty bummed then read a "reliable" forecast. Some precip this weekend & more from January 24-29. Predict of 4-8 for January 24-29. Hang in there...it's coming!
When the SNOW comes in Trail Boss Tom will have the groomer guys fire up the groomers again.
Trails are poor in town. The birm downtown by the Ice Castle is still snow/ice covered. Trail Boss Tom with the help of the City crew pile a lot of SNOW there so it holds for a long time Get better out further but are icy. Get actually Fair to Good in the woods with icy conditions in spots.
The log hauling continues on Trail 10/13 west of the Snowmobile Bridge. Log hauling has begun on Mathwig Rd. The trucks will be crossing over both Trail 10 & Trail 13. Won't be driving on either of the trails. Watch for truck hauling signs.

Warm temps have hit the Eagle River/Vilas County snow country. Best riding is in the woods where there are many miles of great trail riding conditions currently. The trails exposed to the sun are very icy.
Light SNOW this morning & overcast. Both are good. It does look like SNOW this weekend. Stay tuned on that.

Warm temps have hit the Eagle River/Vilas County snow country. That along with the sun today has dropped the snow on the trails. Best riding is in the woods. Those trails exposed to the sun are very icy.
Last night the grooming equipment went out on all trails. Most trails were panned with cutting. This is to keep the ice base in place. Did do cutting on select trails in the woods where the snow cover was better. This cut the chop that had developed.
The log hauling continues on Trail 10/13 west of the Snowmobile Bridge. Either Friday, January 15th or Monday, January 18 hauling will begin on Mathwig Rd. The Trucks will be crossing over both Trail 10 & Trail 13. Won't be driving on either of the trails. Watch for truck hauling signs.

Warm temps have hit the Eagle River/Vilas County snow country. That along with the sun today has dropped the snow on the trails.
The best thing that could happen is for the sun to go undercover again, COLD to move in & Snow. The last looks to be coming around Wednesday.
At this point we are leaving the trails as they are to keep the base in place. Not good to groom when the snow is soft & rolling.

SNO-EAGLES COUNTRY, EAGLE RIVER TRAILS both land & lake are OPEN & groomed.
SNOW started after dark yesterday & continued overnight. Produced about 2.5 inches out on Hwy 70E/Trail 10E. SNOW squalls continue. The squalls look to be Lake Effect.
The Eagle River lake trails.....Catfish Lake Loop & Eagle Lake Trail are marked with orange reflective barrels. Stay by them for safety.
All 3 groomers, the Prinoth Husky, Bombardier BR180 & the Tractor were out once again last night grooming trails. Trails look pretty smooth.

A bit of snow last night. Some Lake Effect early this morining.

Trails are all open in Eagle River & all of Vilas County. 2.5 inches new wet snow here overnight. Cold. Low teens for a high today & windy.
The Catfish Lake Loop Trail the Eagle Lake Trail are OPEN! Stay by orange barrels. There are rough spots on Catfish Lake but frozen.
The groomers went out again last night. All 3 are on the trails again. We did have to replace the tracks on the BR180 Bombardier. That put it out of commission for a couple of nights. Back to business for them all again.
Logging continues on the west end of trail 10/13. That area is marked so be aware. It will continue for awhile. That area is pretty much cleared of snow so it is really icy in those areas. Groomers can't do much about that until the logging is complete.
ONE NOTE. PART OF TRAIL 1OE IS ONE WAY. PLEASE PAY ATTENTION & TRAVEL ON THE CORRECT SIDE. THERE ARE WRONG WAY SIGNS SO.....if you are riding & the signse are all on the other side of the post, you are probably going the wrong way. Here's your sign!

Keep doing the SNOW DANCE & THINK COLD!

SNOWMOBILE LAND TRAILS ARE OPEN & GROOMED!
The Catfish Lake Trail & Eagle Lake Trail still remain closed waiting for more ice to build. The businesses on the lake trails will be out today checking the ice thickness. When the lake trails open I will update this report & the phone report. Until then THE LAKE TRAILS ARE STILL CLOSED.
Snow continues this morning. A mix of lake effect & regular snow. As I drove in this morning I drove through some really heavy snow squalls. They would last for 1/2 mile or so & then stop. Lake effect snow is fall south of Eagle River on the Catfish Lake Trail at 9am.
Windy too today. A COLD front is moving into the area. It's bringing lake effect snow & colder night time temps. The groomers were out last night. They have really been struggling to keep the trails smooooooth. When the temps do not go down enough at night the trails do not freeze & set up. It's been in the lower 20's & even high teens. That just is not cold enough. So the cold is very welcome. Trails will now set much better.
Logging continues on the west end of trail 10/13. That area is marked so be aware. It will continue for about 2 weeks.

It has been snowing off & on since Christmas Eve. Sorry for no reports but I was ill but I am on board again.
Mixed in between the snow was sleet but it doesn't look like it made much of an impact on the trails. Traffic is heavy & the groomer guys are working really hard to keep things in shape. With the temps up a bit over the past couple of days the smoooooooth breaksdown faster. It's 19 degrees at 9am so that & the colder night temps will freeze & set up the trails.

Snowing in Eagle River this morning! My official measurer(my deck railing) located 5 miles east on Hwy 70 & Trail 10E has a little over 1 inch.
Groomers were out last night. Other than the logging listed below no other problems to report.
Trail 10/13N has private landowner logging going on. From Eagle River riding north & then west over the Wisconsin River Bridge after you cross the bridge & come out on the west side there is a section that is plowed. It is marked with logging ahead signs. So be aware of that. This logging crew will be in there about 3 weeks.

VILAS COUNTY TRAILS SET TO OPEN DECEMBER 15TH. SNOW CONDITIONS PERMITTING
The big SNOW STORM of 2009 continues! Looks to me about 8 inches up here in Eagle River. SNOW will continue throughout the whole day. There is a chance that after this SNOW fall stops we may get some LAKE EFFECT. That would be terrific.
Trail Boss Tom has set the first Groomer Driver meeting for tonight. The plan was to pan the trail system on Thursday as Trail Inspection was set for Friday. The Inspection by the County Snowmobile Coordinator is now set for Thursday so I'm thinking the panning will be done tonight.
